Thalassemia can be prevented. ❤️🩸
On 19 July 2026, ideSHi, in collaboration with Sir Salimullah Medical College & Mitford Hospital, organized a Thalassemia and Anemia Awareness Program along with free thalassemia carrier screening for medical students.
We were honored to have Dr. Firdausi Qadri, renowned scientist and Founder of ideSHi, as the keynote speaker. She emphasized the urgent need for increased awareness, early diagnosis, and mandatory carrier screening to help prevent the birth of children affected by thalassemia.
The event also featured inspiring discussions with hospital leadership and faculty on integrating thalassemia carrier screening into national health policy. The enthusiastic participation and thoughtful questions from future doctors reflected a strong commitment to advancing thalassemia prevention in Bangladesh.
Together, awareness, screening, and collaboration can build a healthier future.

ideSHi is proud to announce the successful completion of the 26th Advanced Hands-On Training Program, held from 14–18 June 2026.

🔬 This cohort brought together a diverse group of participants, ranging from students from the University of Dhaka and North South University to medical professionals from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), fostering a rich environment for interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.

🧬 Over five intensive days, participants engaged in lectures, laboratory sessions, collaborative learning, and practical training across Molecular Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, and Genomics.

📢 New Publication Alert!

We are pleased to share our latest research article:

"Diagnostic performance of discriminant formulas and machine learning models for detecting β-thalassemia trait in Bangladesh", published in PLOS One.

In this study, we evaluated 47 discriminant indices and 12 machine learning (ML) models, alongside complete blood count (CBC) metrics, to identify optimal predictors for differentiating between anemic and β-thalassemia trait (βTT) cases.
Population-specific optimal cut-off values were determined for the discriminant formulas. The newly proposed formulas, DF-6 and DF-27, ranked among the top ten performers. DF-6 achieved the best overall performance across the diagnostic metrics. ML models revealed that XGBoost (XGB) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) provided the highest diagnostic accuracy. We believe our findings can contribute significantly to improving the early detection and management of β-thalassemia in Bangladesh, particularly in resource-limited settings.

🌿 World Environment Day 2026 Celebration 🌿

ideSHi marked World Environment Day 2026 with a meaningful awareness rally, tree plantation, and sapling distribution program at Solmaid Community School, Vatara, Dhaka.

Students, teachers, and ideSHi representatives came together to raise awareness on environmental protection, climate change, and the importance of building a greener Bangladesh. Saplings of flowering, fruit, and forest trees were distributed among students to encourage active participation in greening their surroundings.

Speakers, including ideSHi’s Lead Scientist Dr. Firdausi Qadri and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Md. Rofiqul Rahman, emphasized personal responsibility, cleanliness, and the importance of planting more trees for a sustainable future.

Together, we believe community engagement and awareness can help build a cleaner, healthier, and greener world for future generations. 🌱

We are proud to share that a delegation from Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives (ideSHi) participated in the 14th GABRIEL Network International Meeting, held from 3–5 June 2026 in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Co-organized by the Mérieux Foundation and the Charles Mérieux Center for Infectious Diseases, the conference brought together more than 80 researchers and public health professionals from over 16 countries to share research findings, strengthen collaborations, and develop future projects addressing global infectious disease challenges.
Our team actively contributed to critical global health dialogues with major presentations:
Dr. Md Rofiqur Rahman (COO, ideSHi) delivered two insightful presentations. In the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) session, he discussed the "One Health Approach," focusing on transmission routes within human households and pets in Bangladesh. In the Respiratory Infections session, he highlighted epidemiological insights and respiratory microbiome diversity in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Md Ridwan (Research Officer, ideSHi) presented during the prestigious “Young Scientists Award” session, sharing vital genomic and phylogenetic insights regarding the 2023–2024 Dengue outbreak in Bangladesh.
Dr. Umme Kulsum (Assistant Scientist, ideSHi) joined the delegation, engaging with international peers to develop future collaborative network projects.
We are proud to contribute Bangladesh’s research and perspectives to global scientific discussions and look forward to strengthening international collaborations for improved public health outcomes.
