ব্যারিস্টার সুমন ও সংবেদনহীন সমাজ
আমি ব্যারিস্টার সুমনের তথাকথিত ভক্তদের কেউ ছিলাম না, তবে তার কার্যকলাপের অনেক কিছুই ভালো লাগবতো বলে নজরে পড়লে দেখতাম। কিন্তু আমাদের চারপাশে অসংখ্য মানুষকে দেখতাম, মনে হতো যেন সুমনের জন্য সব দিয়ে দিতে প্রস্তুত। আজ সুমনের সাথে যখন রাষ্ট্রীয় আওতায় বিচারবহির্ভূত আচরণ করছে বাংলাদেশের অসাংবিধানিক সরকার, তখন তারা একটুও বিচলিত হচ্ছেন না! এই নীতি-নৈতিকতা-সংবেদনহীন দেউলিয়া মানসিকতা একটা সমাজকে কোথায় নামাতে পারে, আমি ভেবে অবাক হচ্ছি!

We, on behalf of the Bangladesh Awami League Ottawa Canada Branch, deplore the recent havoc of destruction of the properties by the hooligans and infiltrators of Jamaat-BNP-Shibir into the Student’s Quota Movement.
These BNP-Jamaat hooligans cannot tolerate setting fires to BD TV Station, Metro Rail, and other properties. All the culprits should be identified and punished accordingly.
Our deepest and sincere condolences to the families of those unfortunate deaths in this fiasco. It is very much deplorable that they died in the movement; all responsible should be identified and punished.
We stand firmly behind the leader's instructions and our BD PM, Sheikh Hasina, for a peaceful solution to the current issue.

Thoughts on Budget

I am involved in Awami League politics for the 56/57 years as an worker and activist/ leader. The budget presented by Finance Minister on Thursday failed to address the aspirations of the general public. The makers of the budget did not have AL manifesto in their mind. But I am also an economics student and a retired professor and I would say the following :
This budget have less positivity and more negativity. The impact will be felt during the election time.
This budget failed to show a proper role in job creation, will not be able to survive in the international competition in the export of products. The value of the currency cannot be corrected according to the demand in the international market!!
This budget failed to address correct policy in foreign reserves. This budget failed to address the country's possible currency crisis.
A ridiculous proposal to pay minimum tax of Tk 2000 below tax free threshold- is it a joke. What of taxation policy it is? No where in the world it is there.
There are more anomalies in this budget. This is not an election year budget.
Hope PM and Finance Minister will do the corrections in supplementary budget and make it populist and election friendly.
