The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology, Dhaka, is pleased to announce the appointment of Md. Shamsul Islam as Professor. His arrival marks the addition of a distinguished scholar and practitioner whose career has spanned journalism, media research, and higher education administration for over three decades.
Professor Islam joins us most recently from State University Bangladesh, where he served as Dean of the School of Business and Social Sciences and as Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Journalism, Communication and Media Studies. Earlier in his career, he held academic positions at Central Women's University as Associate Professor and Chairperson, the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh as Associate Professor, and Stamford University Bangladesh as Associate Professor and Acting Chairman. He also served as Assistant Professor at the Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB), and for several years as a Research Associate and subsequently Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies, a think tank under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh. He has also taught at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Dhaka, as an Adjunct Faculty member.
His academic credentials are equally distinguished. He completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Master of Arts in Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka, the latter earned with First Class, First Position, and recognised with a Gold Medal. He subsequently pursued a Master of Arts in International Communications at the Institute of Communications Studies, University of Leeds, United Kingdom, under a Chevening Scholarship awarded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Professor Islam's international academic engagements further underscore his standing in the field. He held a Visiting Fellowship with the Programme in Comparative Media, Law and Policy at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Wolfson College, University of Oxford. He also completed a course at the Faraday Institute, St Edmund's College, University of Cambridge, on a full bursary, and has presented research papers nationally and internationally, including at an international conference held at the University of Sussex on media representation in the aftermath of September 11. In addition, he completed postgraduate coursework in Educational Leadership at the Graduate School of Education, Assumption University, Bangkok.
His scholarly output includes one authored book and a substantial body of journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers on media, journalism, and international communications. Most recently, he has also served as a Reviewer for Sage Publications. He continues to contribute regularly to national media on issues of press freedom, media policy, and democratic governance. His columns have been published in The Daily Star, Prothom Alo (English), The Asian Age, Bangla Tribune, Dhaka Tribune, and Daily Waadaa, among other national media outlets.
Beyond his academic and editorial roles, Professor Islam has undertaken a range of consultancy assignments for national and international organisations. He served as a communication policy consultant for a project co-funded by the European Union and worked as a translator and consultant for Transparency International Bangladesh, including service on the jury for its Investigative Journalism Award. He has also worked as a peer reviewer for Global Integrity, a Washington DC-based organisation, contributing to its Global Integrity Country Report for Bangladesh. His earlier consultancy engagements include membership of the project team for Political Islam and Governance in Bangladesh, sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace; service as a local consultant to a Danish review and formulation mission supporting Bangladesh's media sector; and participation in research projects on regional economic cooperation in South Asia and on Bangladesh's foreign policy, funded respectively by the International Development Centre of Japan and the Ford Foundation.
