Pi Day is being celebrated today (14 March) to mark the significance and the scientific phenomenon of the mathematical constant π (pi). The day in March has been chosen because the first three main digits of the mathematical constant are 3, 1 and 4.

The day was first celebrated in 1988 in San Francisco by physicist Larry Shaw, who led an enthusiastic crowd of pi-ans to celebrate the day by eating pie. The US government declared 14 March as World Pi Day in 2009.
The celebration usually kicks off at 1.50 pm. When you put together the date (314) and time (159) of the celebration, it shows 3.14159, the approximate numerical value of pi.

৩.১৪, মার্কিন নিয়মে পাইয়ের এই মানটি ১৪ই মার্চকে নির্দেশ করে। পাইয়ের এই আনুমানিক মানের তাৎপর্য মেনে প্রথম পাই দিবস পালন শুরু হয়েছিল আমেরিকার স্যান ফ্রানসিস্কোর একটি বিজ্ঞান জাদুঘরে। এক্সপ্লোরেটোরিয়াম নামের এই জাদুঘরে দিবসটি পালন শুরু করেছিলেন ল্যারি শ। তাই শ’কেই পাই দিবসের জনক হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করা হয়। ১৯৮৮ সালে পাই দিবস পালন শুরু হয়। আমরা সাধারণত যে কোন দিবস পালন শুরু করি রাত ১২:০০ টা’র পর থেকে। কিন্তু পাই দিবস পালন শুরু হয় রাত ১:৫৯:২৬ সেকেন্ড এ। কারণ বুঝতেই পারছেন, পাইয়ের মান ৩.১৪১৫৯২৬…। এই সময়টিকে তাই পাই মিনিট বলা হয়।
পাই দিবসের পাশাপাশি ১৪ই মার্চ আইনস্টাইনের জন্মদিন। তাই সবার চিন্তার জগত যেন সহজ ও সুন্দর হয়।কারণ, যে কেউ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের জটিল বিষয়গুলো সহজ করে বুঝে নিতে পারে এবং বোঝাতেও পারে অন্যকে।
পাই নিয়ে আমাদের মাতামাতির কোন শেষ নেই। অবশ্য এর শেষও চাই না আমরা। পাই রহস্যময় হলেও একটু একটু করে উদ্ঘাটিত হচ্ছে। আপনারাও পাই দিবসে মেতে থাকুন পাইয়ের সৌন্দর্য্যে।
