The Bengal Delta, shaped by silt and sculpted by meandering rivers, embodies a fluid landscape, creating a certain amorphous character that influences livelihoods, communities, architecture, art, and cultural facets. Therefore, architectural education in this region places strong emphasis on comprehending the morphological aspects of rivers. However, contemporary challenges threaten rivers, impacting urbanization, community life, and the economy. To address these concerns and bring awareness among the people to preserve the rights of rivers and to motivate the youth for a more conscious design approach and thought in the field of architecture, the Department of Architecture at Stamford University Bangladesh actively participates in the global celebration of “World River Day” every 4th Sunday of September.

This year, the department arranged its 2nd seminar on “RIVER I LAND I PEOPLE.. Living with Water” on September 25, 2023. The program featured insightful speeches by the honorable chairman of the Department, Associate Professor Sarah Bashneen Suchana, Assistant Professor Saniya Tabassum, and Assistant Professor Sheikh Itmam Soud. A key highlight was a presentation by Level 4 Term 2 students (batch 71-72) on the mighty Padma River and the livability challenges along its banks. The program was graced by distinguished guests, speeches by renowned environmentalist Professor Dr. Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder (Dean, Faculty of Science, Chairman, Department of Environmental Science, Stamford University Bangladesh), Mohammad Ali Naqi (Vice President, National Affairs, Institute of Architects Bangladesh, Professor, Sonargaon University), Iqbal Habib (Vice President, BAPA, Principal Architect, Vitti Sthapati Brindo LTD), and Sheikh Nahid Neazy (Chairman, Department of English, Stamford University Bangladesh). The event concluded with an interactive discussion session and a vote of thanks by Saniya Tabassum, the Academic Coordinator of the department. The Chairman of the department then presided over a ceremony to distribute souvenirs and certificates to the guest speakers and students.

The program nurtured and motivated young architects towards a more promising and contextually relevant architectural practice in the country for their future endeavors.

Each year on the first Monday of October, World Architecture Day is celebrated all over the world. The UIA Council chose the theme “Architecture for Resilient Communities” for this year’s World Architecture Day.

Department of Architecture, Stamford University Bangladesh therewith arranged a lecture on 17th October under their lecture series “Re-View স্থাপত্য ভাবনা" with the presence of Dhaka’s prominent architect, Ar. Jalal Ahmed. He gave a presentation emphasising on the capacity and responsibility of architecture to create viable community life and opened a discussion on the relationship between urban and rural areas in countries through his works.

Jalal Ahmed started his professional career as an architect in 1983. Currently he is the Principal Architect & the MD of J. A. Architects Ltd. Over the last 40 years, he has designed & planned various projects ranging from urban and rural planning, large and small academic campuses and industrial complexes to affordable housing for urban and rural communities. He is a proponent of humanitarian, socially responsible and sustainable designs. He is a recipient of prestigious international awards like UIA Robert Matthew Prize, ARCASIA Gold Medal, Lafarge-Holcim Asia Pacific Awards jointly with Ar. Wong Mun Summ & Ar. Richard Hassell of WOHA, Monsoon Architecture Awards and the INTBAU Excellence Awards. He has also won IAB Design Awards and Berger Awards for Excellence in Architecture.

The program was started by the opening speech of the Assistant Professor Sabbir Ahmed, student coordinator of the Department and concluded by vote of thanks and crest giving ceremony by chairman of the Department, Associate Professor Sarah Bashneen Suchana. The aim of program was to motivate young architects to work for resilient communities and it was successfully accomplished, with the presence of architecture students from many universities.

A few of our alumni & one faculty member with the 25th Executive Council of Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) at their induction ceremony yesterday. This year, over 50 graduates from our Department achieved their associate/full membership at IAB. We wish them good luck for their professional career ahead.

N.B. Department of Architecture, Stamford University Bangladesh is one of only 13 Departments of the country to have IAB accreditation.
