আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হল একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি বাংলাদেশ ও পশ্চিমবঙ্গসহ সমস্ত বাংলাভাষী অঞ্চলে পালিত একটি বিশেষ দিবস, যা ১৯৯৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ১৭ নভেম্বরে জাতিসংঘ কর্তৃক গৃহীত সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী প্রতিবছর ২১শে ফেব্রুয়ারি বিশ্বব্যাপী পালন করা হয়। এটি শহীদ দিবস হিসাবেও পরিচিত। এ দিনটি বাঙালি জনগণের ভাষা আন্দোলনের মর্মন্তুদ ও গৌরবোজ্জ্বল স্মৃতিবিজড়িত একটি দিন হিসেবে চিহ্নিত হয়ে আছে। ১৯৫২ সালে এইদিনে (৮ ফাল্গুন, ১৩৫৮, বৃহস্পতিবার) বাংলাকে তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রভাষা করার দাবিতে ঢাকায় আন্দোলনরত ছাত্রদের ওপর পুলিশের গুলিবর্ষণে অনেক তরুণ ছাত্র শহীদ হন। যাঁদের মধ্যে রফিক, জব্বার, শফিউর, সালাম, বরকত উল্লেখযোগ্য এবং এই কারণে এ দিনটি শহীদ দিবস হিসেবে চিহ্নিত হয়ে আসছে।
