The Indian Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, first declared November 7 as National Cancer Awareness Day in September 2014. This was done to raise awareness about early detection and discourage a lifestyle promoting cancer.

This day also marks the anniversary of Marie Curie's birth, a scientist who won the Nobel Prize and was born in 1867. She made the discoveries of radium and polonium, which are credited with making the biggest contributions to the war against cancer.
