Every year on May 23, the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula provides a reminder about a preventable health issue that undermines women’s status in the family, wider community, mental health and ability to engage in social and economic activities. With this background, the theme of this year is “Her health is a right: Invest in ending fistula and childbirth injuries”.
Globally, about half a million women and girls are living with obstetric fistula with thousands of new cases diagnosed every year. Reducing obstetric fistula cases can be accelerated by data-driven investment in enhancing access to essential maternal healthcare and surgical services for prevention and treatment. The Government of Bangladesh is dedicated to achieving zero fistula cases by 2030.

World Pre-eclampsia Day is being observed on May 22, 2026 to create awareness on a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia is responsible for 16% of global maternal deaths. It also accounts for half a million fetal and newborn deaths. Regular antenatal care is vital for monitoring and managing risk factors of pre-eclampsia.
Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with Human Reproduction Programme (HRP) (the UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction) hosted a Global Pre-eclampsia Summit. The expected outcomes of this summit included identifying research gaps, clinical guidance, access to essential health products and implementation and advocacy gaps focusing on low‑ and middle‑income countries.
The International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy (ISSHP) and Preeclampsia Foundation stand at the forefront of research, advocacy and care for pre-eclampsia to improve pregnancy outcomes.
