At Pathshala's Resting Academy, photographers and visual artists come together from different cities, languages, even continents — Asia, Europe, the Americas and beyond — and leave as something closer to us.

A 5-month international programme. A residency at Anandi Bari, West Bengal. A pond in Bengal that taught everyone something about trust. Mentors like Shuddhabrata Sengupta, Moushumi Bhowmik, Veeranganakumari Solanki, Bharat Sikka, Ruchir Joshi, Ronny Sen, Aishwarya Arumbakkam, Rohan Chakravarty, Anshika Varma, Munem Wasif, Sarker Protick. An open studio. And friendships that feel like family.

It wasn't restful. It was wild, intense, and transformative — in the best way. This is what a photography education feels like when it goes beyond the camera. 🎞️

Big congratulations to Pathshala alumnus Md Fazla Rabbi Fatiq

His works Fragile / বিদীর্ণ (2025–Ongoing) and Mirage / মরীচিকা (2022–2023) are part of Global Positioning System — a major two-chapter group exhibition taking place across Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai (9 May – 4 October 2026) and Hayy Jameel, Jeddah (20 May – 17 October 2026).

It is always wonderful to see our alumni sharing their work on international platforms and contributing to meaningful conversations through image-making and storytelling.

Global Positioning System is a large-scale group exhibition dedicated to mapping and navigation systems, telling stories of fast cars and donkeys, spinning globes and street barricades, cosmic highways and broken bridges. Bringing together more than 40 artists from over 20 countries, it delves into topographies, transit lines, and simulated landscapes to engage critically with the infrastructure of movement and navigation.

Md Fazla Rabbi Fatiq is a visual artist based in Dhaka. His practice addresses issues of social, geographical, and political.

He completed Professional Photography Programme from Pathshala South Asian Media Institute. His works have brought him a few accolades, including British Journal of Photography Ones to Watch 2021, Grand Prize Winner of Vantage Point Sharjah 10, Winner of Samdani Art Award 2023, and Recipient of Angkor Photo Festival Creation Grant 2021.

Women behind the lens: ‘After state massacres, I began burning the prints as an act of mourning’ 06/05/2026

It is wonderful to see Pathshala alumna , whose work was published in The Guardian

Responding to Iran’s feminist uprising since 2022, Parisa created this project at a time when independent photojournalism was being suppressed. Using open-source protest videos, she isolates frames and re-photographs them with an Instax camera—transforming fleeting digital images into physical prints, preserving moments that might otherwise be lost.

Women behind the lens: ‘After state massacres, I began burning the prints as an act of mourning’ Iranian visual journalist Parisa Azadi set her images alight in response to January’s violent repression by the regime, not to erase them, but to convey ‘rage, grief and refusal’

We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of Raghu Rai today.

A cherished friend of Pathshala and Chobi Mela, Raghu was far more than one of photography’s great masters—he was a teacher, a mentor, and a profoundly human storyteller. During his visits to Bangladesh and his engagement with Pathshala and Chobi Mela, he left behind not only memorable images but also generosity, inspiration, and care that many young photographers will carry with them in their hearts.

Raghu Rai, one of India’s most respected photojournalists and a member of Magnum Photos, documented the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 through powerful images that captured refugees, suffering, resilience, and the human cost of conflict. His photographs from that period were later shown in exhibitions such as “Bangladesh: The Price of Freedom” and “Rise of a Nation,” which reflected both the pain of war and the spirit of liberation. His work appeared in the first edition of Chobi Mela, and he returned to Dhaka on several occasions over the years for exhibitions and photographic exchanges. His last visit to Pathshala and Chobi Mela was in 2019 at Chobi Mela X.

We will remember him with immense respect, gratitude, and love, and his vision and spirit will remain with us always.

May his soul rest in peace.

-Pathshala & Chobi Mela

The Light Stays

Forty years is a long time to know someone. Long enough to stop counting.

We met in 1986. Hong Kong. A jury of four for the Standard Chartered Commonwealth Photography. He was Raghu Rai — the name alone carried weight, carried history. I was a relatively unknown photographer from Bangladesh. Somehow that didn't matter to him, and that told me everything I needed to know about the man.

When the judging was done, the two of us boarded a train to Guangzhou. We shot like men possessed. The light, the streets, the faces — we were hungry for all of it. He teased me for years afterward, the way only an old friend can, because that work became a show at the Nikon Gallery in Richmond while his photographs from the same day sat quietly in cupboards somewhere in Delhi. He never quite forgave the cupboards.

He and Sebastião Salgado wrote the foreword to My Journey as a Witness. I wrote the foreword to The Price of Freedom. We showed up for each other's work the way you show up for family — without being asked.

He came to Chobi Mela. Spent time with Pathshala students. I went to the school he had built and spent time with him. We moved through each other's worlds.

He never approved of my politics. Felt it cluttered the frame of my art. We argued about this the way old friends argue — with affection underneath the friction. Yet when Sheikh Hasina's regime took me, when I was abducted, tortured, thrown into a cell, it was Raghu who wrote first. An open letter to the Prime Minister. His name, his standing, placed on the line for me without hesitation. Whatever he thought about my politics, he knew what justice was.
My criticism of Modi has made me unwelcome in India for some time now. So I could not go to him when the cancer came. I told myself he would shake it off. He had survived the heart surgery and called me afterward, laughing, telling me he felt twenty years old. I believed him. I always believed him.

This morning, Ina Puri's message arrived. The rumours were true.

Raghu is gone.

We have lost one of the great photographers of our time. Someone who understood that the camera is not just an instrument of beauty but of bearing witness. I have lost something harder to name — a friend who knew me across four decades, across borders, across arguments, across a jail cell.
Farewell, my friend.

May the light be with you.

Warmest congratulations to Ashfika Rahman, Pathshala tutor and alumnus, on her participation in “Still Joy — From Ukraine into the World”, an official Collateral Event of the Venice Biennale 2026 at La Biennale di Venezia.

This powerful exhibition reflects on joy not just as a feeling, but as a vital force and a radical act of humanity. Rooted in real-life testimonies gathered by Hlib Stryzhko and Nataliya Gumenyuk, it brings together fragments of lived experiences that challenge and inspire.

Curated by Björn Geldhof and Oleksandra Pohrebnyak, the exhibition unites a diverse group of artists from around the world, including Ashfika, whose work continues to make us proud.

📍 Venue: Palazzo Contarini Polignac, Venice
📅 9 May – 1 August 2026
🕙 10 AM – 6 PM daily (except Monday)
