Warm congratulations to Tanzim Wahab on his reappointment as the Director General of the Bangladesh National Museum.

With his long-standing engagement in art, photography, research and the cultural sector, Tanzim has contributed to Bangladeshโ€™s cultural landscape in many meaningful ways. Since its inception, he has also been serving as the Director General of the newly established July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum in an additional capacity.

We are particularly inspired by his vision of making museums more welcoming and engaging for children and young people, while exploring new approaches to curation, digital storytelling, research and accessibility.

We look forward to seeing these ideas take shape and to witnessing the Bangladesh National Museum grow as a more open, accessible and living space for everyone.

Tanzim Wahab has a long association with Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, where he served as Vice Principal and International Programme Director. He has also served as Director of the Research and Publication Department at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, and has worked extensively as a curator, researcher and educator.

His curatorial practice explores cultural spaces, communities, place-based practices and alternative approaches to art education. He is the Festival Director of Chobi Mela International Festival of Photography, Dhaka, and curator and community facilitator of Spore Initiative, Berlin. Between 2016 and 2021, he served as Chief Curator of Bengal Foundation, leading curatorial research projects and exhibitions across South Asia.

Wishing Tanzim Wahab all the very best for this new chapter. We look forward to the ideas, conversations and possibilities that lie ahead.

Last week, Pathshala welcomed Stephenp Burke and Zillah Bowes from , UK, as part of Connections Through Culture, a programme bringing artists and photographers from Bangladesh and the UK together, supported by the British Council Bangladesh Arts โ€“ British Council .

During their time at Pathshala, Stephen and Zillah shared their artistic practices and recent photographic projects in a public talk, opening up engaging conversations around photography, place, people and community.

They also met with Pathshala faculty members Munem Wasif and Sarker Protick , sharing thoughts on their work, photographic journeys and the project, and exchanging perspectives across different generations and approaches to photography.

Beyond Pathshala, they visited Vukhanda Artistic Space, Brihatta Art Foundation and the British Council, meeting artists, practitioners and members of the wider art community. They also explored the streets and heritage of Old Dhaka, and spent a day by the Padma River, experiencing a different side of Bangladesh through its landscape, people and everyday life.

They also had the opportunity to meet and spend time with our students, sharing their experiences, answering questions and exchanging thoughts about photography and creative practice. These conversations offered our students a chance to hear directly from visiting artists and learn from their journeys.

For us, these days were about meeting, sharing, learning and building a stronger relationship between Pathshala and Grain Projects.

We are grateful to Stephen and Zillah for their openness and generosity, and to everyone who welcomed them and shared their time, work and experiences.

The project will conclude with parallel exhibitions in Dhaka and Birmingham this September, bringing together the work and outcomes of this exchange.

Golam Kasem Daddy Lecture 2026

July 36: A Museum in the Making

For this yearโ€™s Golam Kasem Daddy Lecture, we invite you to join Tanzim Wahab, Director General of Bangladesh National Museum and a valued member of the Pathshala family, who has served as Vice Principal and International Programme Director, as he traces the transformation of Ganabhaban, the former Prime Ministerโ€™s residence, into the July Uprising Memorial Museum.

The lecture will explore why this transformation was considered necessary, how the museum was created, and how the trauma of a historic uprising is being shaped into a collective national memory. It will also engage with the questions, debates and controversies that have emerged along the way.

An evening to listen, reflect, and think together about memory, history, and the making of a museum.

Some relationships are built over time. Some become part of the walls around us. โค๏ธ

Today, as Drik celebrates 37 years, we at Pathshala celebrate much more than an organisation. We celebrate a shared journey, a shared home, and a relationship that has grown alongside generations of photographers, storytellers and image-makers.

Drik began its journey in 1989 with a simple yet powerful belief: that people have the right to tell their own stories, through their own eyes. Nine years later, Pathshala grew from a similar spirit, creating a space where young photographers could learn, question, experiment and find their own voices. Over the years, our journeys have remained closely intertwined, connected by a shared belief in photography, education and the freedom to see the world differently.

โ€‹And perhaps nowhere is this relationship more beautifully visible than here, in DrikPath Bhobon. Though we occupy different floors, we have always shared the same spirit, remaining close and connected through the years. These walls have witnessed classrooms and exhibitions, photographs and conversations, celebrations and difficult days, laughter, late nights and countless memories.

Through the years, Pathshala and Drik have stood beside each other, through moments of happiness and moments of sorrow, through challenges and celebrations. We have shared not only a building, but also friendships, ideas, dreams and the many little moments that make a journey meaningful.

Drik has been a partner, a neighbour, a sister organisation and, in so many ways, a constant companion in Pathshalaโ€™s own story.

Today, we celebrate 37 years of Drikโ€™s courage, imagination and unwavering commitment to seeing and showing the world differently.

Happy 37th Anniversary, Drik. โค๏ธ

Anatomy of Belonging

An evening of presentation and conversation with Sarker Protick, International Programme Director at Pathshala, in conversation with Jaheen Faruque Amin.

The conversation will explore ideas around belonging, artistic practice, place, memory, and identity, as part of HFF Lens: Project Development and Artistic Research.

๐Ÿ“… 4 September 2026
๐Ÿ•” 5:00 PM โ€“ 7:30 PM
๐Ÿ“ SHALA_Neighbourhood Art Space

Friends and well-wishers, please do visit and be part of this evening of thoughtful conversation and exchange.

What does a city remember? What lingers in its light, its ruins, its restless verticality, faded horizon, its silences? In this artist presentation and conversation, Sarker Protick turns his gaze toward the city as a shifting landscape of memory, absence, desire, and transformation. His image-making practices inhabit the spaces between the visible and the elusive, where urbanity dissolves into atmosphere, and the familiar becomes strangely distant.

Following his presentation, writer-filmmaker Jaheen Faruque Amin will join Protick in a conversation on the poetics, polemics, and politics of urbanism: on cities that expand, disappear, fracture, and dream, and on the ways contemporary art might arrest these fleeting urban experiences.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Remembering Ruth Eichhorn

With a very heavy heart, we mourn the passing of Ruth Eichhorn, a dear friend and a deeply cherished part of the Chobi Mela and Pathshala family.

Ruth was much more than an internationally respected photo editor and curator. To us, she was a warm, generous, and thoughtful friend who cared deeply about photographers, their stories, and their journeys. She had a rare way of making people feel heard, valued and encouraged, and her presence always brought warmth to our conversations.

Her connection with Chobi Mela and Pathshala grew over many years. She first joined Chobi Mela VII in 2013, taking part in portfolio reviews, workshops and conversations with photographers and students. She returned for Chobi Mela VIII in 2015, continuing to build the friendships and connections that meant so much to our community.

As the long-time Director of Photography at GEO magazine, Germany, Ruth made an important contribution to contemporary photography. But for us, her greatest legacy will be the human connections she created, the encouragement she offered, and the bridges she built between photographers in Bangladesh and the wider international community.

Thank you, Ruth, for your friendship, your generosity, your encouragement, and for being such a meaningful part of our journey. We will remember your warmth, your curiosity, and the kindness you brought to so many lives.

You will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace, dear Ruth.
