Yet Departure of Another Guardian:
Leaving a Hollow, Aching Void.
It is with profound sorrow I share the news of the passing of Professor Emeritus Syed Manzoorul Islam, a distinguished academic, esteemed writer, and cherished educator, who departed this evening, at the age of 74.
Born on January 18, 1951, in Sylhet, Professor Islam embarked on a remarkable journey in the realm of literature and education. He completed his early education at Sylhet Government Pilot High School and Murari Chand College, later earning his BA and MA in English from the University of Dhaka. His academic pursuits led him to Queen’s University, Canada, where he obtained his PhD in 1981. Furthering his scholarly endeavors, he served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1989.
Professor Islam’s illustrious career began at the University of Dhaka, where he imparted knowledge and inspired generations of students. His literary contributions are equally commendable; he was a prolific critic and writer, offering insightful analyses on luminaries such as Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Sudhindranath Dutta, Samar Sen, and Shamsur Rahman. In recognition of his scholarly achievements, he was honored with the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1996. His short story collection, Prem o Prarthanar Galpo, was celebrated as Prothom Alo’s Book of the Year in 2005.
Beyond his academic and literary pursuits, Professor Islam held the esteemed position of President of PEN Bangladesh from January 2018, advocating for freedom of expression and the rights of writers.
Professor Islam’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication to literature and education. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the academic and literary communities. He is survived by his beloved wife, children, and a multitude of students and admirers whose lives he touched with his wisdom and kindness.
As we bid farewell to this towering figure, we find solace in the enduring impact of his work and the indelible mark he has left on the world of literature and education.
