Through a hypothetical โDengue Preparedness and Accountability Bill, 2026,โ students explored how public health policy is developed through debate, negotiation, amendment, and decision-making.
Taking on roles as government and opposition MPs, independent representatives, Speaker, reporter, and critic, students debated key issues including dengue preparedness, emergency financing, hospital readiness, governance, equity, and accountability.
The exercise demonstrated that effective health policy is shaped not only by evidence, but also by politics, institutional processes, and implementation realities.

For many residents of Dhaka's informal settlements, extreme heat is not an occasional inconvenience but a daily reality that affects health, livelihoods, sleep, and overall wellbeing. As temperatures continue to rise, communities with limited access to cooling, ventilation, and green spaces face some of the greatest risks.
A recent article in The Daily Star highlights these lived experiences and features insights from the research of Senior Research Assistant Nuriya Sadaf Moin and Fariha Nowshin, BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University.
The article underscores the urgent need for inclusive urban planning and heat action strategies that prioritise the needs of the most vulnerable populations.

The MPH students participated in a role simulation of a senior management meeting for an urban primary health care programme in Bangladesh.
Students role-played as members of the senior management committee, including the Executive Director, Communications Head, Finance Head, Operations Head, and HR Director; while others took on the role of programme teams presenting their project management plans. The three teams pitched projects on community health worker burnout, irrational use of antibiotics, and a measles outbreak among children under five.
Each programme team had to negotiate for funding, respond to questions from senior management, justify their priorities and defend their implementation plans. A group of observers also critically reflected on the meeting process, decision-making dynamics, communication styles, and negotiation strategies.

Our MPH students translated systems thinking into practice through a hands-on problem tree and solution tree exercise.
Working in three groups, students explored key public health systems challenges in Bangladesh:
โข Antimicrobial resistance
โข Childhood immunization
โข Community health workers
Each group identified a core problem, mapped its root causes and effects through a problem tree, transformed the analysis into a solution tree, and developed a specific project objective to guide their project management plan.
This exercise encouraged students to move beyond describing health system problems and think critically about how evidence-based objectives can be designed, structured, and translated into actionable interventions.

This article highlights a reality that many adolescent girls in Bangladesh continue to face: navigating critical stages of life without access to accurate information on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Despite national commitments and policy frameworks, far too many young people, particularly those living in urban low-income communities, remain excluded from essential knowledge that could help them make informed decisions about their health, wellbeing, and future.
Drawing on insights from the Together Project 2.0 at BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, the article calls for greater efforts to ensure that SRHR education reaches those who need it most through accessible, inclusive, and context-specific approaches.

The Centre of Excellence for Science of Implementation and Scale-Up (CoE-SISU) from BRAC JPGSPH conducted an evaluation of the COMB model-based intervention to increase facility delivery and family planning uptake among the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) in Coxโs Bazar, in partnership with Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) and the Swiss Red Cross.
The core researchers of the project, Dr. Mrittika Barua, DM Rezoan Kobir, and Muhammad Abdul Mannan, presented the key findings at a national-level Research Dissemination Workshop titled "From Research to Practice: Evidence-Based Approaches to Facilitate Behaviour Change" held on 4th June at Amari, Dhaka.
The key findings of the implementation research reveal that the COMB model approach to improving sexual and reproductive health of the FDMN population significantly increased facility-based deliveries, improved contraceptive use, and positively influenced health-seeking behaviours. Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) and religious leaders emerged as the most trusted and influential agents of behavioural change, with increased male awareness and stronger community advocacy also playing key roles in driving improved outcomes.
The event featured remarks from BDRCS Secretary General Dr. Kabir M. Ashraf Alam, while Swiss Red Cross Country Representative Paul Drossou highlighted that the application of the COM-B model in Rohingya camps demonstrates how simultaneously strengthening capability, opportunity, and motivation can help overcome barriers and build community resilience.
The workshop brought together representatives from government agencies, development partners, humanitarian organisations, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and academic and technical institutions, including icddr,b, BRAC, Friendship, SERAC, and WHO.
This research and dissemination event was funded by the Stanley Johnson Foundation.
Special thanks to all participants and our community partners whose continued engagement makes this work meaningful.
