The chess community loses a true legend of the game today as Jan Timman passes away at the age of 74.
The IUB Chess Club offers its deepest condolences to his family and fans worldwide. Known famously as the "Best of the West," Timman was a titan on the board—arguably the greatest non-Soviet player during an era of complete Soviet dominance.
His contribution to chess extended far beyond his world-class results; as a prolific author, editor of New In Chess, and a brilliant endgame composer, he shaped the way generations of players understood the game. His creative spirit and fighting tenancity will be sorely missed.

🌟 NEW YEAR, NEW TROPHY! 🌟
Huge congratulations to our Joint Secretary, Md. Abu Hanif, for making moves at the 17th DRMC National Science Carnival!
Hanif dominated the board in the Senior Category Chess Showdown, scoring a massive 5/6 points and securing the 2nd Runner-up (3rd Place) trophy! 🥉✨
Your dedication to the game is an inspiration to us all. We can't wait to see more epic battles on the board! 🚀

Is your celebration costing a life? 💔
Every New Year’s Eve, while we celebrate with fireworks and loud crackers, the most vulnerable among us—infants and animals—live through a nightmare.
This 31st Night, let’s choose humanity over noise.
Say NO to firecrackers. 🧨
Protect our children.👶
Save our birds and pets.🐥🐦
Let’s start the year with kindness, not tragedy. 🙏✨
