Behind every news broadcast is a team racing against the clock, and students from CMN 331/314 (Advanced Reporting) got to see it up close!
Led by Mashudul Haque, Chief News Editor at ATN News, along with his team, students walked through the newsroom floor, the Production Control Room, the sound room, and the studios, getting a front-row seat to how a story travels from a simple assignment to a live broadcast.

Organized by the Department of Media and Communication and headed by faculty member Momtaz Parvin, the visit took place on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the ATN News office in Kawran Bazar, Dhaka.

Big thanks to Mashudul Haque (Chief News Editor), Shahidul Azam (Chief Executive Editor) and the entire ATN News team for opening their doors to our students!

**Prof. Zakir Hossain Raju Speaks at “Celebrating Roid Through Conversation”**

Professor Zakir Hossain Raju, Director of King Sejong Institute and Professor, Department of Media and Communication, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), participated as a speaker at **“Celebrating Roid Through Conversation” (āφāĻĄā§āĻĄāĻžāϝāĻŧ āϰāχāĻĻ-āωāĻĻāϝāĻžāĻĒāύ)**, a special discussion celebrating the acclaimed Bangladeshi film *Roid*.

Organised by the **Bishwa Sahitya Kendra Alumni Association**, the event brought together filmmakers, artists, critics, and cinema enthusiasts for an engaging conversation on the film, which gained international recognition through its official selection for the **Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2026**.

Joining Prof. Raju were acclaimed filmmaker and screenwriter **Mejbaur Rahman Sumon** and film critic **Bidhan Rebeiro**.

In his discussion, Prof. Raju reflected on his own journey with the film study circle at Bishwa Sahitya Kendra and highlighted the importance of **trusting and valuing the audience**. He observed that meaningful cinema does not always need to explain everything explicitly. Through images, sounds, situations, and narrative structures, filmmakers can create spaces for audiences to interpret, discover, and construct their own meanings.

Discussing *Roid*, Prof. Raju explored its **multiple layers of reality, symbolism, emotional depth, and philosophical dimensions**. He also placed the film in conversation with internationally celebrated works such as *The Godfather*, *The Weeping Meadow*, *Taste of Cherry*, *Spring, Summer, Fall, Winterâ€Ļ and Spring*, *In the Mood for Love*, *A City of Sadness*, and *Red Sorghum*.

Drawing a connection between *Roid* and Zhang Yimou’s *Red Sorghum*, Prof. Raju further discussed the idea of **“primitive passion”**—the instinctive human emotions surrounding desire, violence, survival, nature, bodily existence, and deeply rooted communal experiences.

The discussion offered a fascinating perspective on how *Roid* can be situated within the broader tradition of world cinema while retaining its distinctive cultural identity and artistic voice.

The participation of Prof. Raju also reflects **IUB’s Department of Media and Communication’s commitment to connecting academic scholarship with cinema, creative practice, and Bangladesh’s evolving cultural landscape.**
