Faculty Highlights: Media and Communication Department Connects with International Cinema at Norwegian Embassy Screening

The Department of Media and Communication at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) continues to bridge academic learning with the global film industry. On Thursday, June 11, 2026, representatives from the department, led by the Head of Department (HoD) Dr. Imran Firdaus, attended an exclusive film screening organized by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dhaka.
The delegation, which included postgraduate students Armanul Karim and Baizid Khan, was invited to the Colosseum Hall at the Gulshan Club for the screening of "Sentimental Value," the latest feature by acclaimed Norwegian director Joachim Trier.
Reflecting on the event, Dr. Imran Firdaus praised the film's complex "narrative architecture," noting how effectively Trier mapped out a screen story of a family dealing with a father's sudden absence and navigating the emotional "stage fright" of overcoming trauma. For the attending postgraduate students, the screening provided a rare, masterclass-level look at contemporary international storytelling techniques.
Following the screening, the group from Media and Communication department met with His Excellency, the Norwegian Ambassador Håkon Arald Gulbrandsen, to discuss the film and explore future avenues for cultural and educational exchange. This engagement underscores the department’s commitment to exposing its students to world-class cinema and building meaningful connections with international cultural missions in Bangladesh

The Department of Media and Communication was privileged to host Professor Mashrur Shahid Hossain for a thought-provoking lecture titled “Unscrewing ‘the doors themselves’: Prosumption of Violence Against and By Women in Media.”

Drawing on Walt Whitman’s call to “Unscrew the doors themselves from their jambs!”, Professor Hossain critically explored the representation of victimized and violent women in film, reflected on violence against men in media, and examined the mediated histories of Birangonas and Comfort Women.

The lecture generated vibrant discussions on gender, violence, memory, and media representation. Students were highly engaged throughout the session, culminating in a fruitful and insightful Q&A discussion.
