💊 Lesson: Subjunctive Mood vs. Indicative Mood (with Conditional Clauses)

📌 What’s the subjunctive mood?

The subjunctive mood is used to express:

Hypothetical situations

Wishes

Demands

Suggestions

Situations contrary to fact

---

Part 1: Conditional Clauses Confusion

Compare:

1. If I were you, I would study more.

2. If he was late, he must have missed the bus.

Explanation:

Sentence 1 uses the subjunctive ("were") to express something unreal or hypothetical — the speaker is not the other person.

Sentence 2 uses the indicative ("was") to describe something that possibly happened in the past — it’s not hypothetical.

---

Part 2: “That” Clauses After Verbs of Suggestion

Correct:

I suggest that he study harder.

The teacher demanded that she be quiet.

Wrong (but common):

I suggest that he studies harder.

The teacher demanded that she was quiet.

> The subjunctive drops the -s in the third person and uses the base form (e.g., “study,” not “studies”).

---

Part 3: Wishes and Hypotheticals

Wishes about the present:

I wish I were taller. (But I’m not.)

Wishes about the past:

I wish I had studied more. (But I didn’t.)

> In both cases, the verb tense shifts backward to show unreality.

---

Quick Test:

Which of these are correct?

1. If she was here, she’d know what to do.

2. If she were here, she’d know what to do.

3. I wish I was better at math.

4. I wish I were better at math.

---

Answers:

Sentence 2 and 4 are grammatically correct (formal), using the subjunctive.

Sentence 1 and 3 are common in speech, but not technically correct in formal writing.
