The Three Gorges Dam ship lift in China works like a giant elevator, carrying vessels inside a water-filled chamber instead of moving them through a long series of locks.
Once a ship enters the chamber, the entire basin is lifted or lowered vertically while keeping the water level stable enough for the vessel to float safely inside.
This system helps smaller ships cross the dam much faster than traditional lock routes, showing how large-scale engineering can turn a major height difference into a controlled vertical ride.
