আমরা শিখব Used to এর ব্যবহার।

Used to এর ব্যবহার নিম্নরুপ:

Used to + base form of Verb

Be/get + Used to + verb এর সাথে ing

যেমন -

I used to go there. ( আমি সেখানে নিয়মিত যেতাম)
They are used to going there. ( তারা নিয়মিত সেখানে যায়)

শুধুমাত্র অভ্যাস বুঝাতে Used to এই ভাবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

কিন্তু অভ্যাস না বুঝালে Verb এর Infinitive form ব্যবহার করা হয়।

যেমন :

Truck is used to carry the load. ( ট্রাক ভার বহনের কাজে ব্যবহার করা হয়)। এইটা ট্রাকের অভ্যাস না।

সুতরাং অভ্যাস বুঝালে এক রকম নিয়ম আর অভ্যাস না বুঝালে আরেক রকম নিয়ম।

চলুন নিছের বাক্যগুলো Solve করি

১) He was used to ( catch/ catching) fish with a hook.

২) I used to ( play / playing) excellently.

৩) Knife is used to ( cut/cutting) things.

আজ আমরা দেখব linking Verb কি?

আমরা সাধারণত জানি verb এর পর Adverb হয়।

যেমনঃ I walk slow/ slowly. উত্তর Slowly
He teaches soft/softly. উত্তর Softly

কিন্তু linking Verb এর পর Adverb হয় না। বরং Adjective হয়।

যেমনঃ He looks handsome/ handsomely.
উত্তর- Handsome

They became dangerous/ dangerously
উত্তর- dangerous

কোনগুলো Linking Verb?

Be, Become, Remain, Stay
Appear, Seem, Sound, feel
Look, smell, taste

এই শব্দগুলো মুখস্ত করার দরকার নেই।

যেমনঃ It seems logical = It is logical.
He appeared normal = He was normal.

অর্থাৎ, এই শব্দগুলোকে be Verb ( am, is, are, was, were, has been, have been) দিয়ে Replace করলে মিনিং চেইঞ্জ হয় না।

সুতারাং, যে সকল Verb কে Be Verb দিয়ে Replace করলে মিনিং চেইঞ্জ হয় না, সেগুলো linking Verb.

Practice:

1. They went mad/madly.
2. It sounds logical/ logically.
3. They seemed perfect/ perfectly.
4. They had been terrible/ terribly.
5. They started happy/ happily.

একটি বিশেষ Clause আছে যাকে Nominal that clause বলে। এই Nominal that clause এর একটি বিশেষ বৈশিষ্ট হলো That Clause টির পর একটি পরিপূণ Sentence থাকে এবং Sentence টি শেষ হওয়ার সাথে সাথে একটি Verb আসে যে verb টি সব সময়ই Singular হয়।
যেমন:
1) That Tanvir is a naughty boy is/are known to all.
2) That my friends love playing football make/makes me feel excited.

এখানে That এর পর প্রথম বাক্যটি Tanvir দিয়ে শুরু হয়ে boy শব্দটি দ্বারা শেষ হয়েছে এবং তার পর পরই একটি নতুন verb is/are শুরু হয়েছে। এখানে is হবে সঠিক উত্তর। কারণ এখানে 'That Tanvir is a naught boy' এই পুরো অংশটুকু হলো is verb এর Subject.
একইভাবে,
1) That my shirts are dirty irritate/irritates my mother.
2) That his girl friend calls him an intelligent guy is/are a matter of concern.

একটি Noun (N2) এর আগে অন্য একটি Noun(N1) এসে N2 কে Modify করলে, N1 Adjective হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয় এবং N1 সব সময় Singular Noun হয়।
যেমন:
I have a book that contains ten pages.
সংক্ষেপে লিখলে- I have a ten-page book.

এখানে page একটি Noun যা book Noun টির আগে আসায় তা Adjective হয়ে গেল এবং Singular Noun হয়ে গেল। এছাড়া book শব্দটির আগে দুইটি Adjective থাকায় তাদেরকে Hyphen দিয়ে আলাদা করা হয়েছে। এ ধরনের Adjective কে Hyphenated Adjective বলে।

যদি ১টি ১০ পেইজের বই থাকে তবে- A ten-page book.
যদি ৫টি ১০ পেইজের বই থাকে তবে- Five ten-page books হবে।

একইভাবে ( Similarly)-
Two construction companies.
Five student Scholarships.
A student car.
Two beautifully degisned lady-hockey bats

# The pace with which the players were showing his performance were really suitable for winning the match.

বনানীতে আমার একটি বাড়ি থাকার কথা ছিল। এই লাইনটির ইংরেজি অনুবাদ কি হতে পারে?

1) There should be a house of mine at Banani.
2) I would rather have a house at Banani.
3) I was supposed to have a house at Banani.
4) I must have had a house at Banani.
