Department of Drawing & Painting
Originally the Fine Art Department founded in 1948, this program was shaped early on by Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin and artist Anwarul Huq, both among the institute’s founding teachers. Students build skills across pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, watercolour, oil, and acrylic, while also studying material techniques and the history of art.
Department of Graphic Design
What started as the Commercial Art Department back in 1948 grew into today’s Graphic Design department, established under Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin with Quamrul Hassan as its first Head. The curriculum covers visual communication, typography, illustration, print, publication, and promotional design—constantly evolving to keep pace with new technology and media.
Department of Printmaking
This department began in 1948 as the Graphic Art Department before being renamed Printmaking in 1978, shaped early on by Shafiuddin Ahmed, Habibur Rahman, and Syed Ali Ahsan. Students explore relief printing, woodcut, intaglio, etching, drypoint, lithography, monotype, and monoprint, treating print as both a technical craft and its own artistic language.
Department of Oriental Art
Founded in 1955 under the Government Institute of Art and led by Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, this department was created to preserve and develop Asia’s artistic traditions. It explores traditional South Asian and East Asian painting and visual practices, linking historical techniques and cultural heritage with contemporary artistic expression.
Department of Sculpture
This department was founded in 1963, when Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin appointed Professor Abdur Razzaque to lead it. Students dive into modelling, carving, and life study, along with metal casting and welding—learning to think in three dimensions and develop a real feel for form, space, material, and texture.
Department of Ceramic
The Department of Ceramic dates back to 1961, when artist Mir Mustafa Ali brought it to life after studying studio and industrial ceramics in England. Today, students here get hands-on with both the creative and industrial sides of the craft—working with clay and pottery, sculpting and creating reliefs, and learning glazing along with a range of forming and surface techniques.
Department of Craft
Artist Junabul Islam, who joined as a Craft teacher in 1968, is credited as the founder of the department in its current form. The curriculum spans batik, tapestry, weaving, woodwork, metalwork, screen printing, appliqué, drawing, and design—bringing traditional craft practices into a modern creative context.
Department of Art History
Art History has been part of the institute’s theory curriculum since 1963, but it only became its own department in 1989, with Professor A.K.M. Abdul Matin Sarker as founding Head. Students study world and South Asian art, indigenous culture, aesthetics, art theory, criticism, and visual culture—examining art across different periods, societies, and traditions.
