এ শব্দটা একটি গ্রীক মিথলজি থেকে এসেছে। যেখানে Narcissus নামে এক ছেলে ছিলো যে নিজের শরীরের সৌন্দর্যে আত্মহারা হয়ে খাওয়া-পরা বাদ দিয়ে দিনকে দিন আয়নার সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে নিজেকে দেখতে দেখতে কাটিয়ে দিতো। ঠিক এ কারণে একসময় তার মৃত্যু হয়। মিথ অনুযায়ী তার হাড়গুলো মাটিতে মিশে সেখান থেকে একটি ফুল গাছ হয়েছিলো। যে ফুলগাছকে আমরা বর্তমানে Daffodil নামে চিনি।
