The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences honored them for deepening our understanding of 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡.

Mokyr was awarded half the prize for his historical analysis of how technological advances shape long-run growth. Aghion and Howitt share the other half for their formal theory of “𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧”, the idea that continuous innovation displaces outdated technologies, keeping economies dynamic.

Although not one of the original prizes established by Alfred Nobel, the 𝐒𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐤𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐥𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐥 is awarded in his honor and is presented together with the Nobel Prizes. ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ওয়ান অফ দ্যা ডিমান্ডেবল সাবজেক্ট IR ছেড়ে সামিয়া জাহাঙ্গীরনগরের ইকোনোমিকস কে বেছে নেয় ইকোনোমিকস এর প্রতি তার ভালোবাসা ও প্যাশন থেকে। সামিয়ার বাবা চায় নাই ও ঢাবি ছেড়ে জাবিতে আসুক। কিন্তু সামিয়া তার বাবার কাছে প্রতিজ্ঞা করে যে জাবিতে আসলে সে ফ্যাকাল্টি ফার্স্ট হয়ে গোল্ড মেডেলিস্ট হবে৷ নিজের পরিশ্রম আর মেধার প্রতি কতটুকু আত্নবিশ্বাসী হলে এরকম প্রতিজ্ঞা কেও করতে পারে!

তবে সামিয়া যা অর্জন করেছে তা গোল্ড মেডেল বা ফ্যাকাল্টি ফার্স্ট হওয়াকে ছাপিয়ে গেছে৷ প্রাচ্যের অক্সফোর্ডকে প্রত্যাখান করে জাহাঙ্গীরনগর থেকে অনার্স মাস্টার্স শেষ করে সামিয়া এখন বিশ্বখ্যাত অক্সফোর্ডে যাবে পিএইচডি করতে। অক্সফোর্ডে একজন বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীর জন্য যেখানে চান্স পাওয়াটাই স্বপ্ন, সেখানে সামিয়া পড়তে যাচ্ছে ফুল ফান্ডেড স্কলারশিপে। ৫ বছরের জন্য বার্ষিক ৫০,০০০ পাউন্ড হারে সামিয়া বৃত্তি পাবে অক্সফোর্ড থেকে তার পিএইচডি সম্পন্ন করার জন্য৷

অক্সফোর্ড ছাড়াও আইভি লীগ খ্যাত যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের "ইয়েল ইউনিভার্সিটি" থেকে ফুল ফান্ডেড প্রি-ডক্টরাল ফেলোশিপের সুযোগ পেয়েছিলো সামিয়া। কিন্তু পড়াশোনার প্রতি আগ্রহ ও নিজেকে আরো শাণিত করার লক্ষ্যে সামিয়া অক্সফোর্ডকেই বেছে নেয়।

সামিয়ার এই অর্জন অর্থনীতি ৪৮ এর, এই অর্জন জাহাঙ্গীরনগরের, এই অর্জন পুরো বাংলাদেশের। সামিয়ার ভবিষ্যৎ জীবনের জন্য অর্থনীতি ৪৮ এর পক্ষ থেকে রইলো নিরন্তর শুভকামনা। ইকোনোমিক এর প্রতি ওর আগ্রহ ও প্যাশনের সাথে আমরা যতটুকু পরিচিত, তা থেকে হলফ করে বলতে পারি সামিয়া এখানেই থামবে না। ও প্রতিনিয়ত কাজ করে যাবে নিজেকে উন্নতির সর্বোচ্চ চূড়ায় নিয়ে যাওয়া পর্যন্ত।
