The latest initiative of East West University Law Clinic
19/11/2025
East West University Law Clinic will be hosting Dr. Md. Ershadul Karim, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 22 November 2025. Dr. Karim will conduct a workshop on โNavigating Artificial Intelligence in the Legal Domain: Opportunities, Barriers, and Strategic Pathwaysโ. The honorable Vice Chancellor of East West University, Professor Dr. Shams Rahman will grace the session with his presence.
Dr. Karim has his PhD in Nanotechnology Law and Policy from the University of Malaya. He was the Deputy Secretary and a member of the Working Group on Policy and Regulation of Artificial Intelligence of the Malaysian Government. He is also a member of the Global AI Ethics Consortium (Technical University of Munich, Germany). He also holds visiting professorships at several universities, including Lanzhou University, Gansu, China, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty, Kazakhstan, and Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia. Dr. Karim teaches and conducts research in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology Law, Privacy and Personal Data Protection Law, Nanotechnology Law and Policy, and Legal Research Methodology. He is a highly cited author. Having secured over USD 1 million in research grants, he has been consulted by global organizations including the UNDP, WIPO, World Bank, EU, and Japan Patent Office. His current research interests include AI ethics, AI governance and regulation, blockchain governance, and history, philosophy, and sociology of technology.
The session recognizes that the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the rise of artificial intelligence have become stark realities of our time. We have reached a tipping point, a moment when technological transformation has entered mainstream society and is poised to shape both the present and the future. AI now sits in the boardrooms of corporations and law chambers. It has also entered the justice system, introducing the concept of augmented justice, where AI assists judges in determining cases across various jurisdictions. This disruptive technological shift is redefining the functioning of public and private institutions and compelling them to adapt, innovate, and reinvent themselves. Yet significant challenges remain. The task ahead is to shape this technological evolution in a manner that is empowering and human-centered, rather than divisive or dehumanizing. It is essential to cultivate awareness and foster a shared understanding that supports a constructive narrative, one that clearly outlines the opportunities, obstacles, and strategic pathways for integrating AI into different ecosystems in a humane and responsible manner. Against this backdrop, the session will explore the future of navigating AI within the courts, legal practice, and the justice system as a whole.
We are extremely thankful to Dr. Karim for accepting our invitation.
