** When a Netflix Series raise serious ESG questions and motivate hardcore research: House of Cards - the popular Netflix Series, and the tale of the just-out paper of Professor Barua with Coauthor Mahade Hasan Dipu in the Business Strategy and Environment (ABS 3/ABDC A) **
In House of Cards, political donations are portrayed as a major source of power and influence. Congressman Frank Underwood and his wife Claire Underwood built relationships with wealthy donors, lobbyists, and corporations (e.g., SanCorp) to secure political advantage. Claire Underwood uses her nonprofit organization, the Clean Water Initiative, to build elite political and financial connections. Questions arise about whether charitable work is being used for political advancement and donor networking. One example was that, with large donations made through the Clean Water Initiative, Remy Danton, a lobbyist for the energy corporation SanCorp, attempted to influence U.S.–China trade and energy policy through his close financial and political relationship with Frank Underwood. With ample evidence, the series explores “dark money”-style political influence, in which funding sources are obscured through intermediaries, nonprofits, or indirect political organizations.
The series raises a critical question: how, and to what extent, do corporations use philanthropic donations, coupled with political interests, to influence firms' ESG behavior? Do firms' ESG performance decline, or do firms tend to greenwash more, leveraging more politically connected philanthropic donations?
In this newly published paper, the paper responds to these questions by examining extensively how firms use politically connected philanthropic donations to shape ESG performance and engage in greenwashing. Appreciate the hard work of coauthor, Mahade Hasan.
