Here are SAT and IUB admission test style Reading and Writing practice question by Bright Prep

1. Every woman deserves not only to survive childbirth but also to live with dignity afterward. Yet in Bangladesh, thousands of women continue to suffer from obstetric fistula, one of the most devastating childbirth injuries caused mainly by prolonged and poorly managed labour. The condition often leaves women leaking urine or stool continuously, isolated from their families and communities, and struggling in silence for years.

This year’s International Day to End Obstetric Fistula carries the theme: “Her health is a right: invest in ending fistula and childbirth injuries.” The message reflects the urgent need for stronger investment in maternal healthcare and better support for affected women.

Question
Which choice best states the main purpose of the passage?

A. To describe the medical procedures used to treat obstetric fistula in Bangladesh
B. To argue that obstetric fistula is a serious maternal health issue requiring greater investment and support
C. To compare maternal healthcare systems in different developing countries
D. To explain why childbirth injuries are becoming less common worldwide

Correct Answer:
B. To argue that obstetric fistula is a serious maternal health issue requiring greater investment and support

Explanation:
The passage focuses on the suffering caused by obstetric fistula and emphasizes the need for stronger investment in maternal healthcare and support systems. The other choices are either too narrow or not discussed in the passage.

2. Bangladesh has pledged to eliminate obstetric fistula by 2030. Current estimates suggest that around 20,000 women between the ages of 15 and 64 are still living with the condition. Although the country has made important progress since joining the global Campaign to End Fistula in 2003, much work remains to be done within the limited time left to achieve the target.

The country now operates 35 Fistula Corners in public hospitals and more than 20 specialised repair centres. Between 2019 and 2025, over 3,500 fistula surgeries were successfully completed, with recovery rates exceeding 90 percent.

Question:

Which choice best describes the relationship between the two paragraphs?

A. The first paragraph explains a policy goal and ongoing challenge; the second provides evidence of progress toward that goal
B. The first paragraph argues that obstetric fistula is increasing in Bangladesh; the second contradicts this claim
C. The first paragraph focuses on medical treatment methods; the second explains the causes of obstetric fistula
D. The first paragraph describes global trends; the second focuses exclusively on international funding efforts

Correct Answer:
A. The first paragraph explains a policy goal and ongoing challenge; the second provides evidence of progress toward that goal

Explanation:
The first paragraph states Bangladesh’s goal to eliminate fistula by 2030 and notes remaining challenges. The second paragraph presents concrete healthcare infrastructure and surgical outcomes showing progress toward that goal.

3. However, healthcare experts are increasingly concerned about the rise of iatrogenic fistula, a form of injury caused by poor-quality surgical procedures, especially unnecessary or improperly managed caesarean sections and hysterectomies. This growing trend highlights the need for stricter monitoring and improved quality of maternal healthcare services.

Behind every fistula case is a painful human story. Many affected women were married as adolescents and gave birth at home without skilled medical assistance. Some lived with the condition for more than two decades before finally receiving treatment. In most cases, they also lost their babies during prolonged obstructed labour.

Question:

What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To explain why caesarean sections and hysterectomies are becoming more common in Bangladesh
B. To highlight a new medical cause of fistula and emphasize the human impact of the condition
C. To compare different surgical techniques used in maternal healthcare
D. To argue that most fistula cases are now caused by home births

Correct Answer:
B. To highlight a new medical cause of fistula and emphasize the human impact of the condition

Explanation:
The first paragraph introduces iatrogenic fistula as an emerging concern linked to medical procedures, while the second paragraph emphasizes the lived experiences and suffering of affected women. Together, the passage combines medical causation with human impact.

4. The article stresses that maternal health should not be judged solely by whether a woman survives childbirth. Obstetric fistula represents a severe maternal injury that often occurs when a woman narrowly survives life-threatening complications during labour.

Preventing fistula requires comprehensive maternal healthcare at every stage, including adolescent health services, family planning, antenatal care, safe institutional delivery, postnatal support, and emergency referrals. Delays in identifying complications or accessing quality treatment significantly increase the risk of fistula, maternal disability, and death.

Question:

Which choice best states the main idea of the passage?

A. Maternal health outcomes should be measured only by survival rates after childbirth
B. Obstetric fistula is unavoidable in cases of prolonged labour
C. Preventing obstetric fistula requires a continuous and comprehensive healthcare system across all stages of maternal care
D. Emergency referrals are the only effective method for preventing maternal complications

Correct Answer:
C. Preventing obstetric fistula requires a continuous and comprehensive healthcare system across all stages of maternal care

Explanation:
The passage emphasizes that maternal health is not just survival and highlights a full system of care—from adolescence through postnatal support—as necessary to prevent fistula and related complications. The other options either contradict the passage or are too narrow.

5. In 2025, health workers screened more than 349,000 households across several districts to identify suspected fistula cases. The campaign confirmed dozens of cases, many of which have already been treated or referred for surgery and rehabilitation. Frontline health workers, midwives, and community volunteers played a central role in this effort.

Bangladesh has also introduced its Third National Strategy to End Obstetric Fistula (2023–2030), which outlines a nationwide plan for prevention, detection, treatment, and rehabilitation. The article argues that the strategy now needs full-scale implementation supported by stronger political commitment, increased investment, and coordinated action among government agencies, healthcare professionals, civil society, and development partners.

Question:

Which choice best describes the structure of the passage?

A. It presents a historical overview of obstetric fistula treatment and then explains why past efforts failed
B. It reports recent screening efforts and then describes a national strategy along with a call for stronger implementation
C. It compares rural and urban healthcare systems in Bangladesh
D. It focuses mainly on individual patient stories to illustrate medical outcomes

Correct Answer:
B. It reports recent screening efforts and then describes a national strategy along with a call for stronger implementation

Explanation:
The first paragraph describes a large-scale screening campaign and its outcomes. The second paragraph introduces a national strategy and emphasizes the need for stronger implementation and coordination.
