We are offering our very first 2-day workshop on 18 April.

The most advanced telescopes at radio wavelengths are now Array Radio Telescopes (ART), arrays of hundreds and thousands of radio antennas guarding the universe like Argus in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. ARTs are everywhere, from the Y-shaped Very Large Array (VLA) in the deserts of New Mexico to the rectilinear Medicina displayed dramatically in the Red Desert (1964) of Michelangelo Antonioni (pictured in the poster).

In this 2-day workshop for undergraduate, postbac and graduate students of Bangladesh, we will learn the basics of radio astronomy and synthesis arrays on the first day, and then apply that knowledge to make a sparse representation of the radio vision of an ART in python. It is a BYOL workshop, so you have to ‘bring your own laptop’ with python and jupyter-lab set up in a UNIX-based operating system (Ubuntu is an excellent choice). "দ্য বিজনেস স্ট্যান্ডার্ডের (টিবিএস) স্ট্যান্ডার্ড ভালো লেগেছে। আমি টিবিএসের এক সাংবাদিককে একটা ইন্টারভিউ দিয়েছিলাম লিখিতভাবে; মানে উনি আমাকে ১৫টা প্রশ্ন পাঠিয়েছিলেন ইমেইলে, আমি একটা গুগল ডকে সেসবের উত্তর লিখে শেয়ার করেছি। সেই ডকের উপর ভিত্তি করে তিনি এই লেখাটা লিখেছেন। টিবিএসের প্রফেশনালিজম প্রশংসা করার মতো। বাংলাদেশে ইমেইলকে এখনো খুব কম মানুষই এতটা সম্মান করতে জানে। তবু একটু সমালোচনা করছি: কাভার পিকটা দেখে ঠিক "একাডেমিক" এস্ট্রোনমির নিউজ মনে হচ্ছে না, পপুলার এস্ট্রোনমির নিউজ মনে হচ্ছে, কিন্তু সেটা সমস্যা না, ধীরে ধীরে সব আরো প্রফেশনাল হবে।
তার পরও, হয়ত যেকোনো লেখার মতোই, এখানেও কয়েকটা ব্যাপার হয়েছে লস্ট ইন ট্রান্সলেশন। যেমন, দূরবিনের মূল উদ্যোগ যে Lamiya Ashraf Mowlaর দিক থেকে এসেছিল তা পুরাপুরি পরিষ্কার হয়নি। সরি, লামীয়া। তবু আমার মনে হয় এই ব্যাপারটা উঠে এসেছে যে, বাংলাদেশে প্রথম একাডেমিক এস্ট্রোনমি রিসার্চ সেন্টার দেশে বসে একজন মানুষ একা কিছুতেই করতে পারত না। প্রথমে লামীয়ার এবং পরে বিদেশে কাজ করা আরো কয়েকজন বাংলাদেশী এস্ট্রোনমারের সক্রিয় সাহায্য ছাড়া এটা পুরাপুরি অসম্ভব হতো। তাই সবাইকে অনেক ধন্যবাদ, বিশেষ করে Syed A. Uddin Shuvo ভাই।
আইইউবিতে কাসা এখনো অফিসিয়াল হয়নি, প্রসেসিং চলছে। আইইউবিতে সাহায্যের কথাও বলতে চাই আরেকটু পরিষ্কার করে। আইইউবিতে আমি চাচ্ছি সেন্টারটা তার ফান্ড এসেট ও ডিসিশনের দিক থেকে পুরাপুরি স্বাধীন হবে, কিন্তু এর সাথে IUB Physical Sciences ডিপার্টমেন্টের এফিলিয়েশন থাকবে। কাসা তার নিজের মতো কাজ করবে, সব ডিসিশনে সিগ্নেটরি হবে কাসা'র মেম্বাররা। কিন্তু কাসা'র বেশির ভাগ কাজ ডিপার্টমেন্টও নিজেদের হিসেবে প্রচার করতে পারবে, কাসা'র পেপারে ডিপার্টমেন্টেরও এফিলিয়েশন থাকবে। এছাড়া আইইউবিতে এস্ট্রোনমির সব কোর্স ফিজিকেল সায়েন্সেস ডিপার্টমেন্টের। কাসা'র টিচিং মিশন পড়ে কেউ হয়ত ভুল বুঝেছেন যে কোর্সগুলা সেন্টারের হয়ে যাবে; এটা ঠিক না। ফিজিকেল সায়েন্সেসের কোর্স সব ফিজিকেল সায়েন্সেসেই থাকবে, এবং এই ডিপার্টমেন্টের এস্ট্রোনমাররা (যেমন, আমি) সেসব কোর্স কোওর্ডিনেট করবে। কোর্স সব ডিপার্টমেন্টের কিন্তু কাসা সেখানে ডিপার্টমেন্টের সহযোগী, আর রিসার্চ সব কাসা'র কিন্তু ডিপার্টমেন্টও সেখানে হবে কাসা'র সহযোগী।" -- Khan Muhammad Bin Asad

The first cycle of our Minor in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) has ended in Autumn 2024 with five courses. And in Spring 2025, we are starting three different tracks within the Minor with some overlap. The minor is for students who want to do a specialization focused on finding scientific information in large datasets, which can be useful for many industry jobs and for future MSc and PhD applications. Because IUB students are registering for the courses of the Minor in Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A) today onward, let me give you a few updates.

We are offering two courses in the A&A minor in Autumn 2024: I will be teaching PHY 424 (Atmospheric and Space Physics) and Prof. Arshad Momen will be teaching PHY 230 (Mathematics for Physics) which is co-offered with the parent course PHY 308: Mathematical Methods for Physicist(s). In PHY 424, I will give an undergraduate-level overview of space plasma and space telescope missions (specifically, Chandra X-ray Observatory). Arshad sir will focus on advanced mathematical methods needed for theoretical (astro)physics, but how advance it can be will probably depend on the background of the students who enroll. As you can see in the poster, the minor has two tracks: observation and data analysis track, and theoretical astrophysics track.

If you are more interested and qualified for programming (mostly python), you should go for the observation track which is heavily dependent on data analysis and simulation with python. If you are more interested in math and theoretical physics, you should definitely focus on the theory track. Currently the theory track has 4 courses, but one can take AST 301: Introduction to Astrophysics (which is semi-theoretical) along with the 4 theory courses to complete the theory track of the minor.

And I know that some students from other universities approached me about enrolling and a IUB student did tell me that IUB actually has an option for non-degree students to enroll for specific courses. I did not get the opportunity to inquire about this further, but within the next week, I will probably be able to share a guideline for non-IUBians to enroll in the courses of the Minor in A&A.
