Eight years ago today, Bangladesh’s first satellite reached orbit. On July 07, 2017, BRAC Onnesha, Bangladesh’s very first satellite was deployed from the International Space Station (ISS). Today, we celebrate the 8th anniversary of that proud milestone; a symbol of innovation, collaboration, and the transformative power of education. BRAC Onnesha was born from the passion, grit, and brilliance of three Bangladeshi young engineers who dared to believe that Bangladesh belongs in space.
What is BRAC Onnesha?
• A 1U CubeSat (10x10x10 cm), weighing approximately 1 kg
• Developed under the BIRDS-1 Project, a multinational academic satellite program led by the Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech), Japan
• Orbited the Earth every 90 minutes at ~400 km altitude
Timeline:
• Launched to space: June 4, 2017 (SpaceX CRS-11, Falcon 9)
• Deployed into orbit: July 07, 2017, from the ISS (Kibō module)
• Mission completed: May 2019 (after ~2 years of operation)
BRAC Onnesha was more than a satellite. It was a national milestone; a testament to what young minds can achieve through education, vision, and global collaboration. It laid the groundwork for Bangladesh’s future in space technology and inspired a generation of STEM students to dream beyond Earth. 🇧🇩
