রাসুলুল্লাহ (সাঃ) বলেছেন, বিড়াল নাপাক নয় । এটা তোমাদের আশেপাশে ঘন ঘন বিচরণকারী প্রাণী। (আবু দাউদ : ৭৫ তিরমিজি: ৯২) আল্লাহর রাসুলের প্রিয় সাহাবি আব্দুর রহমান (রাঃ) তিনি বেশিরভাগ সময় জামার ভিতরে পোষা বিড়াল নিয়ে ঘোরাফেরা করতেন। একদিন তিনি জামার আস্তিনের নিচে একটি বিড়াল ছানা নিয়ে রাসূল (সাঃ) এর দরবারে উপস্থিত হলেন।

সেই সময় বিড়ালটি হঠাৎ করে সবার সামনেই বেরিয়ে পড়লো। এ অবস্থা দেখে রাসূল (সাঃ) তাকে রসিকতা করে বল্লেন। ইয়া আবু হুরায়রা আর্থাৎ হে বিড়ালের পিতা, এই বলে তিনি আব্দুর রহমান (রাঃ) কে সম্বোধন করলেন। এরপর থেকে তিনি মূল নামের চেয়ে আবু হুরায়রা নামেই বেশী খ্যাতি লাভ করেন। আর সেদিন থেকেই তিনি নিজেকে আবু হুরায়রা নামেই পরিচয় দিতে বেশী পছন্দ করতেন।
