At the Youthmappers at BMU orientation on 24 August, we jumped straight into the world of open data with an introductory session on 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐌𝐚𝐩! The session was conducted by our 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐀𝐛𝐮 𝐒𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐦, who walked our new members through the basic steps of mapping and showed how simple tools can make a massive real-world impact 🌐✨

Our executive team was right beside them every step of the way; answering questions, solving setup glitches and guiding them through their very first edits...

Seeing everyone so focused, curious and ready to learn made the session an absolute success! Huge shoutout to our new members for their enthusiasm, the journey of mapping has officially begun!!💚

On August 24, 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗠𝗨 officially kicked off a new chapter with our 𝑶𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒆 for the newest members! The session was a huge success, filled with great energy, big ideas and inspiring discussions about mapping a better world together. 🗺️✨

​We were honored to have our esteemed Faculty Advisor, Sheikh Fahim Foysal Sowrav, among us. He delivered an inspiring and motivational speech to encourage our freshers, followed by the official handover of appointment letters to the new members.

🗺️🙌 Update from the 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝘂𝗿𝘂 program!

This month was an exciting one for our Gurus across Asia-Pacific, as they successfully completed their 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 deployment. 🌿🗺️

Through this deployment, 20 Gurus strengthened their skills in remote seagrass mapping and identification using the HOT Tasking Manager and drone imagery of seagrass beds captured as part of the Monitoring for Seagrass Conservation project in Timor-Leste by our partner, Konservasaun FLORA & FAUNA.

A huge congratulations to all the Gurus! Excited to see them taking their mapping skills beyond buildings and roads – now ready to support emerging mapping needs, including environmental conservation. 🌱

Titled "𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐧-𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐩𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞" (mapped with OpenStreetMap), this poster illustrates the incredible journey of one of the world's most critically endangered shorebirds (Calidris pygmaea). It visualizes the bird's annual migration along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway—from its breeding grounds in the Arctic tundra of Chukotka, Russia, across key coastal mudflat stopovers, all the way to its wintering grounds in Bangladesh and neighboring countries. The visual combines geospatial storytelling, species spotlights, and calls to action for coastal wetland conservation.

We’ve identified the priority areas. Now it’s time to map them in detail. 🗺️

In response to the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that recently struck Flores, Indonesia, we launched mapping campaigns via MapSwipe to rapidly identify areas with buildings – and thanks to everyone’s collective efforts, we’ve successfully completed two of them in less than 48 hours. 🙌

While we continue the remaining mapping needed on MapSwipe, we’re now using the identified priority areas to guide the next mapping phase on HOT Tasking Manager.

Every building and settlement you trace will contribute to essential data on the number and exact locations of buildings and communities in the affected areas, supporting the ongoing response and relief efforts. 🤝
