Geoffrey Cahucer: He is one of the greatest poets in the english literature. He is considered Father of English poetry. His life Duration is ( 1343- 1400). His famous works are;

*** Troilus and Criseyde
*** The book of the Duchess
*** The House of Fame
*** The legend of Good Women.

The age duration of English Literature
The first age of English literature is
• Anglo- Saxon period or Old English period : 450- 1066.
Main Literary Features of this age:
• Most of the Literary works are anonymous.
• Paganism dominates the literary spirit of the time though Christianity is also traceable.
• Strong belief in Fate is reflected.
• Evil is symbolized by Monsters.
• Romantic love is absent.
• Attitude to women is respectful.
• Sea adventures, savagery and heroic activities are honoured.

The 2nd age of English literature is;
• Middle English period(1066-1500)
The characteristic of this age
• Poetry serves as the main genre.
• Prose in English gets a strong Foundation.
• The English language reaches a considerable standard though old spelling continues.
• Drama began in the form of “mystery play”, “Morality play” and “ Interlude”.
• The writers of this age are influence By Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio.
• Love, chivalry and religion are the three main literary subjects of this period.
• The spirit of romance dominates the age.
• Use of pentameter ( ten syllables in each line) begins.
• End- rhyme is introduced.
The middle English period has been divided into three part such as
• Anglo Norman period(1066- 1340)
• The age of Chaucer ( 1340/50- 1400)
• The Barren / Dark Age( 1400-1485)
The 3rd age of the English literature is Renaissance. The duration of this age is ( 1500- 1660). Main literary features of the age :
• Elizabethan literature reflects a great variety of creative genius.
• It demonstrates experimentation and innovation in Dramatic and poetic forms and techniques.
• It is deeply influenced by the Renaissance spirit, especially by the Renaissance literature of Italy, France, and Spain.
• In style it exhibits romantic exuberance.
