DHAKA UNIVERSITY CROWNED CHAMPIONS IN 4TH PROFESSOR KHABIR UDDIN AHMED NATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION 2026
Dhaka University Moot Court Team has achieved the ultimate championship title at the prestigious 4th Professor Dr. Khabir Uddin Ahmed National Moot Court Competition 2026, organized by the Society for Critical Legal Studies (SCLS), the two-day, in-person event commenced on June 6, 2026, at the Faculty of Law, University of Chittagong.
The prestigious national-level contest focused extensively on critical issues related to International Humanitarian Law. Out of a massive pool of 63 teams representing 42 top universities across Bangladesh, only 16 elite teams advanced to the competitive oral rounds after a rigorous written memorial evaluation process.
Throughout the intense four-stage tournament—consisting of the Preliminary, Quarter-Final, Semi-Final, and grand Final rounds—Team Dhaka University showcasing unparalleled mastery, defeating major opposing institutions. Our triumphant champion squad comprises Jannawatul Mawa Suchi (2022-23), Nafisah Tabassum (2023-24), and Zaid Ekram (2022-23), who formally received the winner's crest in front of a distinguished judicial panel including High Court Division Justices.

We extend our heartiest congratulations to our esteemed alumnus, Mr. Md. Nafeez Al Tarik, CFA, FRM, from the BBA in Finance, 11th Batch, on being appointed as a Commissioner of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC).
Mr. Tarik is a highly accomplished capital market leader with deep domain expertise in investment banking, portfolio management, and asset liability management, most recently serving as the Managing Director of Dhaka Bank Securities Limited.
Beyond his corporate leadership, he has been a cornerstone of academic and professional mentorship in our financial ecosystem. As a dedicated visiting faculty member at leading universities and the founder of Professional Finance Studies (PFS), he has passionately trained and mentored the next generation of market participants, corporate professionals, and CFA and FRM candidates. A former Director of CFA Society Bangladesh, he is highly recognized for his role as an advocate for the CFA program and his contributions to the country's capital markets.

DHAKA UNIVERSITY FELLOWS DOMINATE AS WINNERS AT AMAL FOUNDATION CLIMATE HACKATHON 2026
We are incredibly proud to announce the outstanding success of our students at the Climate Hackathon 2026, where fellows from the University of Dhaka demonstrated exceptional leadership and innovation. Competing among the top minds across the nation, brilliant teams from Dhaka University secured placements in four out of the five final selected projects. In this high-stakes competition, the two-member teams each secured a grand prize of BDT 2 Lakh, while the solo teams each walked away with BDT 1 Lakh to fund their innovative climate solutions.
The prestigious event, organized by the Amal Foundation, which took place on 21 May 2026, at Hotel Sea Moon in Cox's Bazar, brought together 30 elite climate fellows from various universities across Bangladesh. Following a rigorous pitching and evaluation process before an expert panel, five standout projects were selected based on innovation and scalability. The winning teams from the University of Dhaka include the team of Mahfuza Amir Ela & Nawsin Fatmi (awarded BDT 2 Lakh), the cross-university team of Atoshi Karim alongside Sadia Zaman Arshi from Khulna University (awarded BDT 2 Lakh), and the solo teams of Tajrean Alam Nili (awarded BDT 1 Lakh) and Kathy Diba Rema (awarded BDT 1 Lakh).
These practical, youth-led initiatives address critical environmental challenges in Bangladesh, marking a vital shift from baseline advocacy toward measurable climate adaptation strategies. The platform successfully brought together government representatives, international non-governmental organizations, and climate specialists to celebrate and support the next generation of environmental leaders emerging from the nation's premier academic institutions.

To celebrate World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, the Dhaka University Quiz Society - DUQS is hosting DUQS Earth Beat Challenge 2026, a free online MCQ quiz contest for all currently enrolled students of the University of Dhaka.
This initiative aims to promote environmental awareness by testing participants on topics like climate change, biodiversity, sustainable development, and green technologies.

DU ECONOMICS ALUMNUS DR. KHALILUR RAHMAN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE 81ST UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY
We are incredibly proud to announce that Dhaka University alumnus and Bangladesh’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Khalilur Rahman has been elected as the President of the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and marking the first time in nearly 40 years that Bangladesh will hold the prestigious one‑year presidency of the global body’s main deliberative forum.
The election took place on June 2, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where Dr. Rahman secured 99 votes out of 190 valid secret ballots. He successfully won the contested election for the Asia-Pacific slot against his opponent, Andreas S. Kakouris, the Special Envoy for Multilateralism from Cyprus, who received 91 votes. Bangladesh is set to assume the leadership of this prestigious global forum when the 81st UNGA session commences this upcoming September.
Dr. Rahman has an illustrious academic and diplomatic background, having stood first class first in his M.A. examinations in Economics at the University of Dhaka in 1977 and topping the first regular Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination in the same year before entering the Foreign Service in 1979. He subsequently earned an M.A. in Law and Diplomacy and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Shafkat Ahmed Chowdhury, a 4th-year student from the Institute of Disaster Management & Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS), University of Dhaka, following his participation in the prestigious SUSI Global Student Leaders Program 2025 at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA, has channelled his global exposure into founding a massive youth-led international platform. He currently serves as the Founder and Executive Director of the newly established organization.
The initiative, named the International Alliance for Sustainable Development & Livelihood Enhancement (IASDLE), already spans ten countries. Under Shafkat's leadership, alongside co-founders from Nigeria, Jordan, and Indonesia, the alliance coordinates youth leaders across Bangladesh, the United States, India, Jordan, South Korea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Zambia, Sri Lanka, and Malawi. Within just eight months of its inception, IASDLE has conducted Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) awareness sessions across four countries and successfully implemented two critical livelihood projects in Bangladesh, including providing pure water sources for ten families and distributing a rickshaw to support an underprivileged individual.
Operating with the core objective of ensuring global sustainable development and improving community livelihoods, the alliance is rapidly scaling its operations. Active programs are already underway in Bangladesh and Nigeria, while projects across six additional countries are in their phased implementation stages. Furthermore, IASDLE is currently undergoing formal integration processes to officially include Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal as new member nations to expand its cross-border youth network.

DHAKA UNIVERSITY RANKED 52ND GLOBALLY, 1ST IN SOUTH ASIA IN THE INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE RANKINGS 2026
In the latest edition of Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026, Dhaka University has been ranked 52nd globally and has emerged as the highest-ranked institution in South Asia for cross-disciplinary scientific research.
Dhaka University secured the 52nd position jointly with Hong Kong Baptist University, outranking notable international institutions such as the University of Florida. This inaugural edition of the ranking evaluated 911 universities across 94 countries and territories. The assessment strictly measured institutional performance across key metrics, including research quality, funding, collaboration, and specific support systems dedicated to cross-disciplinary innovation.
This remarkable global recognition underscores the university's growing research capabilities and its expanding international footprint in specialized scientific research. Continuous Progress of Dhaka University in International Rankings: Recognition of Excellence in Education and Research
Dhaka University (DU) has consistently made progress in global rankings due to its outstanding excellence in education and research. Recently, Dhaka University secured the 301–350 position in the Asia University Rankings published by the UK-based education magazine, Times Higher Education (THE). In 2025, this position was within the 401–500 bracket.
Published on Thursday, April 23, 2026, this latest ranking includes a total of 929 universities from 36 Asian countries. Among them, 28 public and private universities from Bangladesh secured spots. Dhaka University jointly secured the top position among the universities in the country.
Dhaka University also achieved significant progress across various ranking indicators. Last year, the overall score of the university was 31.5–34.3, which rose to 38.3–40.1 this year. Additionally, the research environment indicator increased from 12.0 to 15.7, the research quality indicator leaped from 58.8 to 74.3, and the industry-academia linkage indicator improved from 21.4 to 33.2.
This progress reflects the continuous efforts to strengthen the university’s research activities, improve the quality of education, and enhance industry-academia collaboration.
Notably, Dhaka University's success has recently become visible in various global rankings. The consecutive achievements in these rankings are highlighted below:
A. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Dhaka University advanced by 200 steps compared to the previous edition, placing itself in the 800–1000 bracket. Furthermore, by participating in the QS Sustainability Rankings, Dhaka University secured the top spot among Bangladeshi universities in the list of the world's best sustainable universities. For the third time, Dhaka University secured the 634th position among the top 1000 universities in the world.
B. In the "QS World University Rankings 2026" published by the world-renowned UK-based education and research organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Dhaka University has made it into the top 600 universities in the world for the second time. In this year's ranking, the university is positioned at 584th, ensuring the top spot among higher education institutions in Bangladesh.
C. For the first time in history, 9 departments of Dhaka University achieved positions in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
• Engineering & Technology Category: Dhaka University advanced 100 steps from last year to rank between 401 and 450 globally. Under this, the Department of Computer Science & Information Systems ranked 551–600, the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering ranked 501–550, and the Department of Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering ranked 501–575.
• Social Sciences & Management Category: Advancing 50 steps from last year, it currently ranks between 401 and 450 globally. Under this category, the Department of Accounting & Finance ranked 251–300, Business & Management Studies ranked 401–450, the Department of Economics & Econometrics ranked 351–400, and the Department of Sociology ranked 301–375.
• Life Sciences & Medicine Category: The Department of Medicine ranked between 651 and 700.
• Natural Sciences Category: The Department of Physics & Astronomy ranked between 551 and 600.
• Arts & Humanities Category: Positioned between 501 and 550.
D. In the second edition of the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings, Dhaka University outperformed 911 universities from 94 countries to secure the 52nd position globally and ranked 1st in South Asia.
E. Dhaka University has secured the top position in terms of the number of scientific research articles published among various institutions in Bangladesh. This information was published by "Scientific Bangladesh" magazine after analyzing data from the US-based Scopus database.
F) Dhaka University secured the top position among Bangladeshi universities in the QS Asia University Rankings. Among Asian universities, Dhaka University was ranked 112th.
G. For their extraordinary research work, 35 teachers and researchers from Dhaka University have been included in the list of the world's top 2% scientists for the first time. This list was jointly published by Stanford University in the United States and Elsevier, a Netherlands-based research publisher. These achievements further solidify the international recognition of the university's research and academic excellence.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam extended his heartfelt thanks to the university's teachers, students, and researchers for Dhaka University's continuous progress in global rankings, stating:
"The overall improvement in research quality, research environment, and industry-academia linkage indicators is a highly positive sign for our future journey. We believe that if this trend continues, Dhaka University will soon be able to establish an even more honorable position in the global arena."
He reaffirmed the commitment to achieving excellence in education and research and expressed a firm determination to work relentlessly to further strengthen the university's position by international standards.

Huge congratulations to Nurunnahar Nimni, a proud student of Department of Geology at Dhaka University, for achieving the ultimate mountaineering milestone! On May 27, 2026, at precisely 5:24 AM, Nimni stood atop the world, conquering Mount Everest (8,848.86m).
With this phenomenal feat, Nimni has carved her name in history as the 3rd Bangladeshi woman and the 8th overall Bangladeshi to summit the world’s highest peak. She is also the sole adventurer from Bangladesh to conquer Everest this season, flying the red and green flag high across the sky.
Her historic triumph comes 14 years after the legendary Nishat Majumder (May 19, 2012) and Wasfia Nazreen (May 26, 2012) first opened the doors for Bangladeshi women on Everest. Following in the footsteps of previous icons like Musa Ibrahim, M A Muhit, Sajal Khaled, Babar Ali, and Ikramul Hasan Shakil, Nimni’s perseverance proves that no mountain is too high for the youth of Bangladesh.
