Quantum physics was born in 1900, when found a formula for the spectrum of the black-body radiation. But it was who realized the revolutionary character of the idea of (1905). After the groundbreaking discovery by , in 1913, that the idea of quantization allows one to render an account of the spectrum of the hydrogen atom, quantum mechanics developed as a heuristic science. In 1923, a French man came up with a new idea to explain the theory of atomic structures. He initiated a series of progress that would put the formalism of quantum mechanics on a solid ground, by introducing the concept of . That French man is our "scientist of the day" today.

It's the birthday of , the man who made groundbreaking contributions to quantum theory --

(Scientist of the Day - 15 August)

The first works of Louis de Broglie (early 1920s) were performed in the laboratory of his older brother and dealt with the features of the photoelectric effect and the properties of x-rays. In his 1923-24, doctoral dissertation, he made a bold assertion. Considering Einstein's relationship of wavelength to momentum, he proposed that this relationship would determine the wavelength of any matter (look the image) and suggested that all matter has wave properties. This concept is known as the de Broglie hypothesis (an example of wave-particle duality) and forms a central part of the theory of quantum mechanics.

In 1927, physicists and , of Bell Labs, performed an experiment where they fired electrons at a crystalline target. The resulting diffraction pattern matched the predictions of the de Broglie wavelength. De Broglie received the 1929 for his theory and this was the first time that it was ever awarded for a Ph.D. thesis.

De Broglie became the first high-level scientist to call for establishment of a multi-national laboratory, a proposal that led to the establishment of the European Organization for Nuclear Research ( ).
