“Not Higher Degrees, but Morality Should Be the Foundation of Education”
✍️ Column by:Md Emran Talukder
In today’s society, the goal of education seems to have become a mere race for academic degrees. We are desperate to see our children highly educated, but how dedicated are we to shaping them into ideal human beings? This is a question we all need to reflect on.
Higher degrees and certificates lose their meaning when an educated person cannot distinguish between right and wrong, remains silent in the face of injustice, aids corruption, or disregards human values.
We dream of our children becoming doctors, engineers, teachers, or scientists—but above all, we must ensure they become good human beings. Individuals who believe in humanity, are truthful, responsible, compassionate, and just. A person educated in moral values is a blessing for society, whereas a degree-holder without morality becomes a burden to it.
The family, society, and educational institutions—all three must work together to promote moral education. Beyond textbooks, we must teach honesty, empathy, respect, and self-restraint. A culture of practicing morality must be nurtured from early childhood—from home to school.
Let us not just dream of higher degrees for our children, but commit to raising them as individuals enriched with moral and human values.
Because to change society, we must first change people—and to change people, we must begin with morality..
