📝 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤: This paper examines how education, knowledge, perception, and disaster experience shape household disaster preparedness and its role in mitigating income losses, using an instrumental variables approach on a large-scale dataset. The findings reveal that the Disaster Preparedness Index (DPI) can reduce household per capita net income loss by nearly 64% relative to the mean through the unemployment channel, underscoring the potential of informal education and community-based training in strengthening disaster risk reduction.

The Department of Economics, North South University, deeply mourns the untimely passing of Md. Roman, Office Support Staff at the NSU–UWA Agribusiness Centre of Excellence (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un). His loss is felt profoundly across our entire department community.

Roman was a gentle, soft-spoken individual whose warm presence left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His familiar, smiling face in the corridors and common spaces of our building was a small but meaningful part of daily life at the department — and one that will be deeply missed by faculty, staff, and students alike.

May Allah grant Md. Roman Jannatul Firdaus and bestow upon his beloved family the patience and strength to bear this devastating loss. He will remain in our hearts and our prayers.

The Department of Economics at North South University hosted the third episode of the Spring 2026 Brown Bag Seminar Series on Thursday, March 5.

The seminar brought together faculty members, students, and research enthusiasts for another engaging session of research presentation and discussion. 🎓

Our speaker for the event was 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗶𝗿 𝗔𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗱, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at North South University, who presented his research titled: "𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙡 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝘿𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙝"

The study examines labor market discrimination in Bangladesh and explores how high school background, religion, and gender may influence employment outcomes.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻:

1️⃣ Graduates from religious high school backgrounds receive significantly fewer callbacks in the job market.

2️⃣ The difference remains even when resumes are comparatively stronger, indicating deeper bias in hiring decisions.

3️⃣ While broad gender-based discrimination is not strongly evident, female candidates appear more likely to receive callbacks for lower-paying and client-facing roles.

These findings highlight how signals related to educational institutions and social identity can shape early employment opportunities in Bangladesh’s labor market. 📊

Just past noon last Thursday, Feb 19, Episode 2 of Spring 2026 opened to a full SBE Dean’s Conference Room — a hybrid session with strong participation both in person and online.

We hosted Wilfrid Laurier University’s Associate Professor of Economics 𝗗𝗿. 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗺. In his third appearance in the NSU Economics Brown Bag Seminar Series, he presented:

The paper delivers sharp empirical evidence on how extreme heat shapes adolescent schooling and labor outcomes in rural Bangladesh.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀:

1️⃣ A clear temperature threshold emerges at 𝟯𝟲°𝗖.
2️⃣ Each additional day above 36°C lowers school attendance by 𝟯.𝟭 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 and raises child labor by 𝟮.𝟱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀.
3️⃣ The burden falls disproportionately on 𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙨.
4️⃣ Three-year cumulative exposure produces measurable long-run losses.

The channels are concrete — income shocks, rising domestic labor demands, and restrictive gender norms. This is how 𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙠 turns into 𝙝𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣. 🌡️📉

The discussion ran long. Questions came from faculty and students in the room and from colleagues joining online. The exchange was rigorous and direct. 💬

This was Dr. Karim's third presentation in our Brown Bag series. The previous two papers he presented here later landed in leading ABDC A*/ Scimago Q1 journals, including one in the 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘴. We wish this work the same trajectory. 📈
