We recently conducted a Jolly Phonics training workshop with a small group of teachers and parents, focusing on how to make early literacy learning effective and enjoyable for young learners.
During the session, participants explored:
✅ The five key steps of Jolly Phonics
✅ How to teach sounds in a structured and engaging way
✅ Fun-filled activities that can be included in lessons
✅ Useful resources for teachers to bring phonics to life in the classroom and at home
It was a highly interactive session where parents and teachers worked together, practiced strategies, and shared ideas to support children in building strong foundations in reading and writing.

Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing. It starts with learning the letter sounds of English. Children then learn how to ‘blend’ these letter sounds together to read a word, so that d-o-g becomes the spoken ‘dog’. They then learn how to ’segment’ a word into its sounds, so that the spoken ‘dog’ is heard as d-o-g. This is necessary for writing. To put the learning into practice, suitable ‘decodable’ reading books are used.
