বয়লারের দহন কার্যে যে বাতাস ব্যবহৃত হয় তাকে বয়লারে প্রবেশ করানোর পূর্বে যার সাহায্যে উত্তপ্ত করা হয় তাকে এয়ার প্রি হিটার বলে।
বয়লারের এ পরিত্যক্ত উত্তপ্ত ফ্লু গ্যাসকে বাতাস উত্তপ্ত করার কাজে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

এয়ার প্রি হিটার ব্যবহারের উদ্দেশ্য :
১. উত্তপ্ত বাতাস প্রবেশ করানো হলে ফার্নেসের তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধি পায়, এর ফলে পানিতে বেশি পরিমান তাপ সঞ্চালন করা যায় এবং প্রতি কেজিতে
জ্বালানীর বাষ্পায়ন ক্ষমতা বেড়ে যায়।
২. ৩৫°-৪০° তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধির ফলে বয়লারের দক্ষতা ২% বৃদ্ধি পায়।
৩. এটা নিম্ন মানের জ্বালানীকে জ্বলনে সহায়তা করে।

Wet Back Boilers:
In wet back boilers as the name suggests the reversal chamber is completely surrounded by water. The combustion reversal chamber is surrounded by water and therefore the heat in the flue gases is optimally utilized. Radiation losses are reduced as none of the parts of the combustion chamber are open to atmosphere instead they are surrounded by water. That means fewer losses, and lesser fuel bills. Most efficient modern boilers supplied are we***ck type.

Dry Back Boilers:
The reversal chamber in dry back boilers is not completely surrounded by water. The posterior part is exposed to the atmosphere. This leads to the increased radiation losses, as the radiant heat is lost to the atmosphere instead of going to the water as in wet back boilers. Earlier generation boilers used to be dry back.

Thus wet back boilers ensure lesser radiation losses and hence save fuel.

The layout of the tubes involves the number of passes the tube will make to pass the heat from the boiler furnace before being discharged. These can be two- pass and three pass boiler.

A correctly maintained and operated boiler heating system is inherently safer and more reliable than a poorly maintained one.
