Many times, when we want children to do something, we use threat-based language.

For example:

“If you don’t do this, you will be punished.”

This kind of language may make a child do the task immediately out of fear. But it does not necessarily create love, responsibility, or genuine commitment toward that task.

Instead, we can use positive communication and say:

“If you do this, I will be really happy. And if you can do it, I will feel really proud of you.”

Or,

“If you don’t do this, I will honestly feel disappointed.”

When we communicate with children in this way, it can create a positive emotional connection in their minds.

As a result, they may start trying to do the task from their heart. Over time, they can develop love, responsibility, and focus toward that task. Eventually, you may not even need to remind them to do the right thing again and again.

Therefore, in parenting and teaching, our goal should not be simply to control children. Instead, we should try to convince, inspire, and positively influence them.

So, whenever possible, let us avoid unnecessary threats and punishment-based communication and try to motivate children through encouragement and appreciation.

Because you may be able to make a child do something today by frightening them. But when that child grows up, they may no longer be afraid of you.

However, if you positively influence them from an early age, InshaAllah, they will grow up wanting to do the right thing because they understand its value—not simply because they are afraid of you.

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

English Meaning:

“My Lord, grant me from Yourself a righteous offspring. Indeed, You are the One who hears all supplications.”
