Dhaka International University Moot Court Society

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in partnership with the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB); organized the 14th Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition on International Humanitarian Law on 05–07 October 2023. The competition was held at the IUB campus, Bashundhara, Dhaka. Around 30 public & private universities from Bangladesh participated the competition. A team consisting of three students from the Department of Law, DIU also participated it under direct supervision of Mr. Mobarak Hossain and Mr. Asadullahil Galib, Lecturers in Law of DIU and Moderators of DIUMCS. The students were namely, Sourav Mia, Nusrat Jahan and Mitu, all are from LLB (Hons) 59 Batch. Mr. Galib was the official coach for the DIU team in the competition.

The journey of more than two months for taking preparations ranging from study of IHL and agreed fact, drafting memorials to preparing for oral rounds competition got ended. The team learned a lot about International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Law and International Moot Court Competition.

DIUMCS is thanking Mr. Raisul Islam Sourav, Assistant Professor and Chairman, Department of Law & President of DIUMCS for providing every necessary cooperation in arranging such a nice and successful participation, and also Mr. Nasir Ahmad, Assistant Professor in Law, DIU for his time-befitting guidelines.

The 4th Jessup Workshop titled “May it please the Court: Unveiling the Art of Jessup Mooting”, was held on September 28-29, 2023 at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka. The Workshop was organised by Jessup Bangladesh in collaboration with Hearth Bangladesh, International Law Students Association (ILSA) and University of Dhaka and supported by the United States Department of Justice, Office Of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance And Training (DOJ/OPDAT), Bangladesh IP Forum, and Old Bailey Chambers.

The Workshop was a two-day intensive training program for law students interested in participating in the upcoming Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, 2024. The Workshop aimed at elevating the performance of the representing teams in the International Round of the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Competition, 2024, and in general targets to hone the advocacy skills of the participating students. The Workshop was opened by Prof. Dr. Asif Nazrul, Chairman of the Department of Law, University of Dhaka.

A team consisting of five students from the Department of Law, Dhaka International University (DIU) participated in the Workshop. Mr. Asadullahil Galib, Lecturer, Department of Law & Moderator, DIUMCS led the team into the workshop as the Team Coach. The students were Emam Hasan Mehedi, Jony Sarkar, Shahadat Hossain Supol, Mehedi Hasan Shakib and Suhana Nur.

On the first day (28/9/23), our students participated in various sessions and learned about guidelines for oral submissions, art of answering questions in oral submissions, fact marshalling, drafting a strong memorial and the fundamentals of international law and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The sessions were conducted by the country's high-profile mooters and previously successful in the Jessup Competition. The first day ended with an interactive learning session with the Global Round Best Memorial Awards Winner Team of 2023 from the Harvard Law School.

On the second and last day (29/9/23), our students participated again in various sessions and learned about tips and techniques in writing memorials, art of rebuttal, and overview of the Jessup Competition. Additionally, they interacted with Global Round Champion Team of 2023 from the Amsterdam Law School.

The Workshop got ended with a closing ceremony presided over by Prof. Dr. Nazmuzzaman Bhuian, Chief Moderator of the Dhaka University Moot Court Society (DUMCS), where the Chief Guest was Justice Borhanuddin, Honorable Judge, Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, the Guest of Honour was Justice Zafar Ahmed, Honorable Judge, High Court Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and the special guest was A B M Hamidul Mishbah, Managing Partner, OLD BAILEY Chambers.

Today (18 September 2023) the Department of Law, Dhaka International University, has arranged Parliament Visit for the 1st and 4th semester students from 65th and 62nd Batches of LLB (Hons) program. Parliament Visit is a unique initiative of Dhaka International University (DIU) where the students of DIU get opportunity to visit the Parliament to learn about the law making process.
During this special visit to the House of the Nation, the parliament of Bangladesh, Students were overwhelmed with the architectural design and expert opinions on law making procedure given by Deputy Secretary, Mr. Nazmul Haque and the description on the library of the parliament given by Library officers. They had an opportunity to see historical and rare documents from the archive of the parliament library & ask questions to the Parliament officials.
A group of students lead by Associate Professor Mily Sultana along with Assistant Professor Sharmin Sultana, Assistant Nasir Ahmad, Lecturer Mobarak Hossain and Md Asadullah Al Galib, has enjoyed and learned a lot of things from this very short visit.
We, the Department of Law, grateful to the BOT Chairman, Barrister Shamemem Haider Patwari MP for giving us such a wonderful opportunity and a special thanks to you from all our faculties and students. We are extremely grateful to all officers of the parliament who have helped giving instructions during our visit. In the end of visit, we got another opportunity to meet with the government ruling party whip Mr. MD Atikur Rahman MP and He has briefed our students encouraging to learn and obey their teachers and parents. It was a successful and wonderful visit for us.

Some glimpses of final round and prize giving ceremony of 4th Dr. M I Patwari Intra Department Moot Court Competition-2023 which held today (16 August 2023) in the moot court room at BCEL Building.
After a head to head legal battle between two finalists in the bench of judges- Quazi M H Supan, Associate Professor of Law, DU and Advisor, Department of Law, DIU; Barrister Muhammad Mashiur Rahman Sabuj, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh & Director, MHRL, DIU and Masrur Saleken, PhD, Additional District and Sessions Judge & Adjunct Faculty, DIU announced a team from 62nd Batch of LLB (Hons) as the Champions and a team from 61st Batch as Runners-up.
The prize giving ceremony was presided by Prof. Dr. AWM Abdul Huq, Dean, Faculty of Law, DIU while the Chief Guest was Professor Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice Chancellor, DIU. Dr. S Q Patwary, Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees, DIU, Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Ganesh Chandra Saha and Registrar Professor M Rafiqul Islam were present & distributed prizes among the participants as special guests.
All guests, judges, Dean and Departmental Chairman have given speach and handed over awards and certificates to winners and all the participants.
This competition was organized by Dhaka International University Moot Court Society (DIUMCS) and the event were moderated by Mobarak Hossain and Asadullahil Galib, Lecturers of Law, DIU.
At the end, all the guests & participants took part in a photo session.
