A Glorious Throwback to the Golden Era of Indian Classical Music

Step back into the early twentieth century — the year 1912, in the culturally rich city of Kolhapur, where a legendary moment in the history of Hindustani classical music was captured forever.

At the very heart of this priceless archival photograph stands Ustad Abdul Karim Khan (1872–1937), the founder of the Kirana Gharana, one of the most influential schools of Hindustani music. Revered for his ethereal voice, flawless intonation, and profound emotional expression, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan redefined the way raga was experienced — not merely as sound, but as bhava (emotion) and sadhana (spiritual pursuit). His artistry elevated music into a form of meditation, where precision met devotion.

Flanking him are some of the greatest torchbearers of the early Kirana tradition — a gathering of musical brilliance and dedication:

Shri Balubhai Rukadikar – on Tabla, weaving rhythm with grace and sensitivity.

Pandit Sawai Gandharva – on Tanpura 1, a devoted disciple who would later become the guru of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, ensuring the gharana’s golden continuity.

Pandit Sureshbabu Mane – on Tanpura 2, Ustad’s gifted son, who carried his father’s teachings into the realm of classical and Natyasangeet traditions.

Pandit Harishchandra Kapileshwari – on Tanpura 3, a devoted vocalist who upheld the gharana’s melodic purity.

Pandit Balkrishnabuwa Kapileshwari – on Tanpura 4, another stalwart of the same lineage, adding depth to this iconic ensemble.

This photograph is much more than a moment frozen in time — it is a portrait of musical heritage at its most sublime. The calm intensity on each face speaks of deep discipline and an almost spiritual dedication to Sur and Taal. In the days before microphones and recording studios, this was music in its purest form — intimate, sacred, and profoundly human.

Ustad Abdul Karim Khan’s Kirana Gharana went on to influence generations of musicians, including Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Gangubai Hangal, Firoz Dastur, Prabha Atre, and many others who carried forward the gharana’s hallmarks — purity of tone, slow unfolding of raga, and emotional introspection.

This image, lovingly preserved by the Hindustani Classical Music Archives, stands as a treasure for students, scholars, and admirers of classical music. It reminds us that every note sung today carries echoes from a century ago — echoes of the voices, hearts, and souls that built India’s musical legacy.
