East West University Undergraduate Admission Test Short Essay and IELTS Writing Task 2 Practice

“Some people think technology has made life more complicated. To what extent do you agree or disagree?”

Band 7–9 Model Answer

Technology has become an inseparable part of modern life, influencing how people communicate, work, and manage daily tasks. While some argue that it has made life more complicated, I largely disagree with this view because its overall impact has been to simplify and improve human life.

On the one hand, it is understandable why some people believe technology increases complexity. Modern devices and digital systems are constantly evolving, requiring users to regularly update their knowledge and skills. For example, older individuals may struggle with online services such as mobile banking or digital government platforms. Moreover, excessive reliance on technology can sometimes lead to distractions, information overload, and even dependence on devices, which may create stress rather than convenience.

On the other hand, technology has significantly reduced complexity in many essential areas of life. Communication has become instant and effortless through smartphones, messaging applications, and video conferencing tools, allowing people to stay connected across long distances. Similarly, everyday tasks such as shopping, bill payments, and travel bookings can now be completed within minutes online, saving both time and effort. In addition, automation and digital tools in workplaces have increased efficiency and reduced the burden of manual work.

In conclusion, although technology may introduce certain challenges, particularly in terms of adaptation and overuse, its benefits in simplifying communication, services, and work processes are far greater. Therefore, I disagree with the view that technology has made life more complicated; instead, it has generally made life more convenient and efficient.
