Recently, Clefs Music Foundation supported a research-based musical project named “Mapping Melodies: 5 Songs 5 Stories of Migration” designed by Ishrar Habib along with generous support from British Council.
This project was showcased at Commonwealth Scholars Welcome Home Event 2025 at British Council on 28 January, 2025. With an MSc in Global Migration from UCL, and extreme passion for Music, Ishrar Habib is the only Commonwealth Scholar in Bangladesh working at the crossroads of Music and Migration.
Ishrar has been a student of the Department of Violin at Clefs Music Conservatory later playing for Dhaka Symphony Orchestra under Clefs Music Foundation.
Upon completing Music Theory course from Clefs Music Conservatory, she scored the highest with 95% marks in her batch at ABRSM Music Theory Exam (Grade 3) conducted by Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, London in 2019.
About the Project:
“Mapping Melodies: 5 Songs 5 Stories of Migration in Bengal” is an interdisciplinary performative project designed and directed by Ishrar where her passion for Music meets her area of study-Migration. This is her first project asserting her firm belief in arts-based methods in migration research.
“This project features 5 songs that essentially carry unique stories of migration, displacement, and movement in Bengal. Inspired by Moushumi Bhowmik’s work, this project bears essence of my thinking in the choosing of the local/global songs along the timeline of British Colonial era to the establishment of Dhaka as the capital of independent Bangladesh,” she said.
She further said, I am grateful to Clefs Music Foundation, the chairperson Anindyo Mahadi and the esteemed founders of CMF, and the musicians who helped me realize my dream project.””I am truly honoured and grateful to British Council Bangladesh for choosing to showcase this project at the Commonwealth Scholars’ Welcome Home Event 2023-2024 on 28 January 2025 with all the necessary funding and logistical support.”
“My sincere gratitude to the wonderful audience who came up to me with their precious appreciation,” she said.
NB: Scholarly information drawn primarily from Moushumi Bhowmik, PhD, Dr Sumon Ahmed, and Kamruzzan Rabbi.
