The Girl on the Tree:
A Story from Satgoria Guchcha Gram, Jagannathdighi Union, Chouddagram, Cumilla
The little girl sat quietly on the bent branch of a tree, hugging its trunk as if it were her closest friend. Her smile was small but genuine. Beneath her stretched a green field, and above her, an endless blue sky. She owned nothing, yet for that moment, it felt as if the whole world belonged to her.
She lived in Satgoria Guchcha Gram, a homeless rehabilitation settlement in Jagannathdighi Union under Chouddagram, Cumilla. Their tiny house had little more than a roof that protected them from the rain. There was no television, no computer, no toys, and often not enough food for tomorrow.
Her mother left home before sunrise every day. She worked as a domestic helper in the homes of wealthier families, washing dishes, cleaning floors, and doing whatever work she could find. Her tired hands carried the burden of survival, while her daughter waited patiently for her return.
The girl had never truly known the joy of going to school. Not because she lacked curiosity, but because poverty demanded sacrifices. Books, uniforms, and school supplies were luxuries beyond the family’s reach. While other children learned from classrooms, she learned from trees, birds, rivers, and the changing seasons.
Yet something extraordinary lived within her.
She laughed without pretending.
She dreamed without complaining.
She played without expensive toys.
She found adventure in climbing trees, racing with the wind, and watching clouds drift across the sky. Every leaf became a story, every bird a companion, and every sunset a celebration.
When asked what she wanted to become, she simply smiled and said,
“Today I want to climb this tree. Tomorrow… Allah knows.”
She did not worry about the future because today’s happiness was enough for her heart.
Many people, surrounded by wealth and comfort, spend their lives chasing more—more money, bigger houses, higher positions. Yet they often lose the ability to smile without a reason.
This little girl possessed none of those things, but she held something far more precious: contentment.
Her story is not meant to glorify poverty. No child should be denied education because of financial hardship. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, to dream, and to shape a better future.
But her life reminds us of an important truth:
Happiness is not measured by what we own, but by how deeply we appreciate what we have.
As she sat on that tree, smiling at the world below, she unknowingly taught a lesson that many successful adults spend a lifetime trying to learn.
Sometimes, the richest hearts are found in the poorest homes. And sometimes, the greatest classroom is not built with bricks, but with resilience, gratitude, and hope.
