WHAT IS WUSHU???

Wushu ( 武术) is a form of contemporary Chinese martial arts that blends elements of performance and martial application. Wushu training emphasizes quickness, explosive power, and natural, relaxed movement. The wushu practitioner must combine flexibility with strength, speed with flawless technique, fierce intent with effortless ex*****on.
The character “Wu” in wushu is composed of two Chinese characters, namely “Zhi” which means “to stop” and “Ge” which is an ancient weapon of war. With that the essence of the character Wu is indeed to stop conflict and promote peace. The practice of wushu not only develops a strong and healthy body, but also a strong mind with high humanistic values, as its practice focuses on “Wu De” or martial ethics.
Modern wushu encompasses a wide variety of Chinese martial arts styles, which can be categorized in several ways. Along one axis, wushu is divided into bare hand and weapon-play styles, where the various wushu weapons are grouped into long-range, short-range, flexible, and double weapons. Along another axis, wushu styles are categorized by the martial arts system which created them. For example, the southern martial arts system includes bare hand, broadsword, and staff styles. Staff styles, on the other hand, have been created by the northern, southern, and even drunken fighting systems.
A standard wushu training program, however, concentrates on a “core curriculum” of eight major styles.
WUSHU has a history of more than
2000 years in china and is widely known as kung fu in some parts of the world. It made its debut at the 10th Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 when a Chinese team gave wushu demonstrations there.
Wushu takes its origin from China but belongs to the world. ’’ This Slogan expresses the Chinese people’s wish to promote this traditional sports throughout the world, for it benefits the people both physically and mentally. And great efforts have been made by Chinese wushu circles over the years in this direction. In August 1985 the preparatory Committee of the international Wushu Federation was formed.
Under the influence of traditional Chinese ethics, wushu has developed a philosophy of its own on the issue of morality, as may be seen from many watchwords, such as “Wushu mirrors morality”, “A wushu master is valued for his moral character, not for his physical power”, and “Morality goes before pugilism” . Instead of being discarded as feudalist rubbish, the moral principles underlying these sayings should be observed and developed by wushu people of all times.
Today, when wushu is spreading far and wide in the world and facing a bright future, we should do our best to disseminate not only its techniques, but also its moral ideas.
One who sets great store by the moral code of wushu is fully aware that its true aim is not to beat and harm other, but to improve his health, to defend himself, to become a noble character. It has nothing to do with the evil practice of fighting in the street, bullying and hooliganism .
On the contrary, a real wushu master knows how to behave himself and how to handle human relations properly- between individual and individual, between individual and community. That’s why the wushu community advocates reverence for the master, care for the disciple, respect for the opponent, brotherhood among different branches and schools and friendship through competition. Its morality is not confined to training, teaching, competition and demonstration, but extended to one’s conduct, personality and way of life. Wushu master must have not only two “virtuous hands,” but also a “virtuous tongue,” which means that he must always be modest and never speak evil of others behind their back. Only by setting up a high moral standard, his relations with fellow beings and acting accordingly can one reach perfect in the mastery of martial arts or wushu .
