Empowering coastal communities to face the realities of climate change 🌍

A Knowledge Dissemination Workshop titled “Enhancing Coastal Resilience: Combating Climate Change in Cox’s Bazar”was successfully organized today by Nirmol Bangladesh - নির্মল বাংলাদেশ , in collaboration with Independent University, Bangladesh and with MAGIC Initiative as the local partner. The event took place at the BRAC Learning Center in Kolatoli as part of the COLOCAL initiative, which focuses on co-creating locally driven climate adaptation solutions in Least Developed Countries.

The workshop aimed to transform research findings into practical knowledge and actionable solutions—empowering farmers, fishers, women, and youth from some of Cox’s Bazar’s most climate-vulnerable communities, including Naziratek, Samiti Para, Khurushkul, and Chowfoldandi Bridge areas.

🔍 Key insights from the research revealed:

👉 92% of fishers have experienced a severe decline in catch due to extreme weather and changing climate patterns
👉Around 60% of farmers reported reduced crop yields and increased pest attacks
👉 72.6% of participants noted rising expenses, while 60.3% faced declining household income
👉Environmental degradation is worsening due to harmful practices like destructive trawling and chemical waste from dry fish processing

👥 The workshop created a vital platform for direct dialogue between affected communities and government officials. With 50 participants—including farmers, fishers, women, youth, researchers, journalists, and local leaders—the discussions focused on practical adaptation strategies and policy support.

💬 Key contributions included:

👉 Fisheries management and sustainable practices
👉 Climate-resilient agriculture and salinity-tolerant crops
👉 Youth empowerment and institutional volunteering
👉Women’s financial inclusion through alternative livelihoods and microcredit
👉 Improved early warning systems, cyclone shelter management, and transparent relief distribution

This initiative marks an important step toward strengthening local adaptive capacity, improving access to services, and building long-term resilience across Cox’s Bazar.

Together, through collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and community leadership—we move closer to a climate-resilient future. ✊

MAGIC Initiative is proud to have our Head of Media & Documentation, Asif Ahmad Udoy , represent us at Y-STAGE 2026 — a national youth-led summit dedicated to addressing gender inequality and promoting inclusive social transformation under the theme “Empowering Change: Building Inclusive Futures.”
