University থেকে Industry-তে যাওয়ার সবচেয়ে বড় অদৃশ্য Gap কোথায়?
Accreditation-এর কাজ করতে গিয়ে বিভিন্ন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের Industry Advisory Panel-এর সদস্যদের সঙ্গে বসার সুযোগ হয়েছে। Industry–Academia-এর বিভিন্ন forum-এও নিয়মিত আলোচনা হয়েছে। এসব অভিজ্ঞতায় একটি বিষয় বারবার খুব স্পষ্টভাবে সামনে এসেছে—বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে একজন শিক্ষার্থী যে জ্ঞান অর্জন করে এবং industry-তে গিয়ে সেই জ্ঞান দিয়ে যে ধরনের সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে হয়, তাদের মধ্যে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ “translation gap” আছে।
এই gap syllabus-এ সবসময় দেখা যায় না, পরীক্ষার খাতায় ধরা পড়ে না, এমনকি ভালো CGPA-ও অনেক সময় এটি প্রকাশ করে না।
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আমরা হয়তো জিজ্ঞেস করি, “এই algorithm কীভাবে কাজ করে?”
Industry-তে প্রশ্নটা অনেক সময় হয়, “এই algorithm-টাই কেন ব্যবহার করলে? Alternative কী ছিল? Accuracy কিছুটা কম হলেও faster model নেওয়া উচিত কি না? তিন দিনের deadline-এর মধ্যে solution deliver করতে পারবে? ছয় মাস পরে অন্য developer তোমার code maintain করতে পারবে?”
এখানেই শুরু হয় আসল পার্থক্য।
University-তে অনেক সময় right answer গুরুত্বপূর্ণ; industry-তে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হয়ে ওঠে right decision।
ধরুন, একজন CSE graduate একটি Machine Learning project করেছে। Random Forest, XGBoost কিংবা Neural Network ভালোভাবে জানে এবং model-এর accuracy 95%। Academic perspective থেকে এটি অবশ্যই ভালো achievement।
কিন্তু industry-তে প্রশ্ন আসতে পারে—
“তোমার model 95% accurate। কিন্তু inference time বেশি। Production-এ প্রতি second-এ 10,000 prediction করতে হবে। তুমি কী করবে?”
এখন শুধু algorithm জানা যথেষ্ট নয়। ভাবতে হবে accuracy, latency, memory, scalability, cost এবং maintainability-এর trade-off নিয়ে।
হয়তো শেষ পর্যন্ত 95% accurate model-এর পরিবর্তে 92% accurate কিন্তু অনেক দ্রুত, scalable এবং কম খরচের model নেওয়াই business-এর জন্য ভালো সিদ্ধান্ত।
Industry সবসময় theoretically best solution চায় না; অনেক সময় practically best solution চায়।
আরেকটি খুব বাস্তব বিষয়—“Code works” মানেই “Good code” নয়।
University assignment-এ program সঠিক output দিলেই অনেক সময় কাজ শেষ। কিন্তু industry-তে সেই code যদি ৫,০০০ line-এর হয়, documentation না থাকে, variable-এর নাম বোঝা না যায়, testing না থাকে এবং অন্য developer code-টি বুঝতে না পারে—তাহলে সেটিই বড় সমস্যা।
কারণ industry-তে আপনি একা কাজ করছেন না। আজ আপনি code লিখলেন, ছয় মাস পরে হয়তো অন্য একজন developer সেটি maintain করবে।
তাই প্রশ্ন শুধু “তোমার code কাজ করে?” নয়; প্রশ্ন হলো—
“অন্য কেউ কি তোমার code বুঝতে, test করতে এবং পরিবর্তন করতে পারবে?”
এটাই software engineering mindset-এর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ।
আরেকটি বড় gap হলো deadline এবং constraints।
University project-এ হয়তো কয়েক সপ্তাহ বা কয়েক মাস সময় থাকে। Industry-তে client বলতে পারে, “আগামী শুক্রবারের মধ্যে Minimum Viable Product চাই।”
তখন ১০টি feature একসঙ্গে implement করার সুযোগ নাও থাকতে পারে। সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে হবে—কোনটি এখন সবচেয়ে জরুরি, কোনটি পরে করা যাবে, কোথায় technical debt নেওয়া যায়, কোন risk গ্রহণযোগ্য এবং কোন অংশ production-এর জন্য অবশ্যই stable হতে হবে।
অর্থাৎ এগুলো শুধু textbook-এর problem নয়; এগুলো decision-making problem।
Teamwork-এর gap-টিও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
ধরুন, একটি software project-এ frontend developer, backend developer, database engineer, QA engineer এবং DevOps engineer একসঙ্গে কাজ করছে।
আপনি backend developer হিসেবে অসাধারণ code লিখলেন। কিন্তু frontend team-এর সঙ্গে API contract ঠিকভাবে communicate করলেন না, কিংবা database structure-এর পরিবর্তন অন্যদের জানালেন না। পুরো project-ই আটকে যেতে পারে।
অর্থাৎ—
Individual brilliance ≠ Team success
Industry-তে শুধু “আমি কত ভালো programmer” তা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নয়। আরও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলো—“আমি কি অন্যদের সঙ্গে কাজ করে একটি solution deliver করতে পারি?”
এখানে communication-এর কথাও আসে।
Communication skill মানে শুধু ভালো English বলা নয়। এটি মূলত problem-কে পরিষ্কারভাবে communicate করার দক্ষতা।
ধরুন, আপনি একটি critical bug পেয়েছেন।
শুধু বললেন, “Sir, problem হচ্ছে।”
একজন professional হয়তো বলবে—
“Login module-এ authentication bug পেয়েছি। এটি invalid token-এর ক্ষেত্রে হচ্ছে। Root cause identify করেছি। Fix করতে প্রায় ৩ ঘণ্টা লাগবে। এর মধ্যে temporary workaround হিসেবে option B ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে।”
দুজনই একই problem দেখেছে। কিন্তু দ্বিতীয়জন problem + impact + cause + solution + timeline পরিষ্কারভাবে communicate করছে।
Industry-তে এই দক্ষতার মূল্য অনেক বেশি।
তাহলে কি University education যথেষ্ট নয়?
আমার মনে হয়, এখানে বিষয়টি একটু balancedভাবে দেখা দরকার।
University-এর কাজ industry training centre হয়ে যাওয়া নয়। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রধান দায়িত্ব হলো strong foundation তৈরি করা, যাতে একজন graduate নতুন technology, framework এবং problem দ্রুত শিখতে পারে।
আজ React জনপ্রিয়, কাল অন্য framework আসতে পারে। আজ একটি AI model জনপ্রিয়, কয়েক বছর পরে অন্য architecture dominant হতে পারে।
কিন্তু programming fundamentals, algorithms, data structures, databases, operating systems, computer networks, software engineering, mathematics, statistics এবং problem-solving-এর মতো foundation দীর্ঘমেয়াদে একজন graduate-কে টিকে থাকতে সাহায্য করে।
তবে একই সঙ্গে শিক্ষার্থীকে সেই knowledge বাস্তব সমস্যায় প্রয়োগ করার সুযোগ দিতে হবে।
যেমন, শুধু—
“Implement Dijkstra's algorithm.”
এর পরিবর্তে scenario দেওয়া যেতে পারে—
“একটি logistics company-এর delivery routing system তৈরি করতে হবে। আপনার কাছে ১ লাখ location এবং real-time traffic data আছে। কোন approach ব্যবহার করবেন এবং কেন?”
তখন শিক্ষার্থী শুধু algorithm নয়, decision-making-ও শিখবে।
Machine Learning project-এ শুধু “Accuracy কত?” না জিজ্ঞেস করে প্রশ্ন করা যেতে পারে—
Model কত দ্রুত? Memory requirement কত? Deployment cost কত? False positive-এর business impact কী? Data পরিবর্তিত হলে model কীভাবে behave করবে?
তাহলেই শিক্ষার্থী বুঝবে—
একটি model তৈরি করা এবং একটি usable system তৈরি করা এক জিনিস নয়।
Industry problem দিয়ে capstone project করানোও অত্যন্ত কার্যকর হতে পারে।
ধরুন, একটি ব্যাংক fraud detection problem দিয়েছে। শিক্ষার্থীদের শুধু model বানাতে না দিয়ে পুরো process-এর মধ্য দিয়ে যেতে দেওয়া হলো—
Problem Understanding → Data → Model → Evaluation → Deployment Consideration → Documentation → Presentation
তখন classroom knowledge বাস্তব workplace context-এর সঙ্গে যুক্ত হবে।
একইভাবে code review culture তৈরি করা দরকার। একজন শিক্ষার্থী code লিখবে, অন্যজন review করবে। আলোচনা হবে—কেন এই approach, code readable কি না, edge case কী, testing আছে কি না, performance কেমন এবং future maintenance কীভাবে হবে।
আর industry professionals-কে শুধু seminar speaker না বানিয়ে problem giver বানানো আরও কার্যকর।
একজন industry expert এসে এক ঘণ্টা lecture দিলেন—এতে exposure হয়। কিন্তু তিনি যদি বলেন,
“এটি আমাদের বাস্তব business problem। তোমরা চার সপ্তাহ কাজ করো। শেষে solution দেখাও।”
তখন শিক্ষার্থীরা বুঝবে, real-world problem-এর answer শুধু Google বা ChatGPT থেকে সরাসরি পাওয়া যায় না; problem-টাকেই আগে বুঝতে হয়।
তাই শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য আমার সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পরামর্শ—
শুধু “আমি কী জানি?”—এই প্রশ্ন করবেন না। নিজেকে জিজ্ঞেস করুন, “আমি যা জানি, তা দিয়ে বাস্তবে কী করতে পারি?”
Data Structure & Algorithm (DSA) জানলে real-world problem-এ প্রয়োগ করুন।
Database জানলে শুধু SQL query লিখবেন না—একটি scalable system কীভাবে design করবেন, তা ভাবুন।
Machine Learning জানলে শুধু model train করবেন না—modelটি কোথায় ব্যবহার হবে, ভুল prediction-এর cost কী এবং production-এ কীভাবে deploy হবে, সেটিও ভাবুন।
Software Engineering পড়লে শুধু project submit করবেন না। নিজেকে প্রশ্ন করুন—
“আমার code যদি আগামীকাল অন্য একজন developer-এর হাতে যায়, সে কি সহজে বুঝতে পারবে?”
শেষ পর্যন্ত University থেকে Industry-তে যাওয়ার সবচেয়ে বড় challenge সবসময় কতগুলো programming language জানি—এটা নয়।
বড় challenge হলো—
Knowledge → Application → Decision → Delivery
এই চারটি ধাপের মধ্যে সংযোগ তৈরি করা।
University foundation দেবে। Industry বাস্তব constraints-এর মধ্যে কাজ করতে শেখাবে। আর শিক্ষার্থীর দায়িত্ব হলো—এই দুই জগতের মাঝের bridge নিজেকেও তৈরি করা।
কারণ চাকরির প্রথম দিন industry সাধারণত জানতে চাইবে না—
“তুমি textbook-এর কতগুলো chapter মুখস্থ করেছ?”
তারা জানতে চাইবে—
“সমস্যাটা তুমি কীভাবে বুঝবে, কীভাবে সমাধান করবে, কেন এই সিদ্ধান্ত নেবে এবং সময়ের মধ্যে কীভাবে একটি নির্ভরযোগ্য solution deliver করবে?”
আমার কাছে এটাই University–Industry gap-এর সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ।
আর এই gap graduation-এর পরে আবিষ্কার করার চেয়ে graduation-এর আগেই বুঝে ফেলা অনেক বেশি মূল্যবান।
কারণ তখনও শেখার, ভুল করার এবং নিজেকে প্রস্তুত করার যথেষ্ট সময় থাকে।
ডিগ্রি আপনাকে University থেকে বের করে দেবে; কিন্তু problem-solving, decision-making, teamwork, communication এবং delivery mindset আপনাকে Industry-তে টিকিয়ে রাখবে।

🌿 A Heartfelt Farewell to Prof. Dr. Swapan Kumar Palit 🌿

Yesterday, the Institute of River, Harbor and Environmental Sciences (IRHES), CUET had the privilege of bidding a heartfelt farewell to Prof. Dr. Swapan Kumar Palit on the occasion of his well-deserved retirement.

Prof. Dr. Palit served with great distinction as the Chairman of the Center for Environmental Science and Engineering Research (CESER), the predecessor of the present IRHES. Through his visionary leadership, unwavering dedication, and outstanding academic contributions, he played a pivotal role in advancing environmental science and engineering education and research at CUET.

During the farewell, faculty members, officers, and staff of IRHES expressed their sincere gratitude and presented a small token of appreciation in recognition of his remarkable service, leadership, and lasting contributions to the institution.
