With this powerful message at the heart of the initiative, a Thalassemia Awareness Seminar was successfully held today at Katirhat Girls’ High School, Hathazari, Chattogram, with the participation of around 150 students.
The programme aimed to raise awareness about Thalassemia—a hereditary blood disorder—and the importance of premarital screening in preventing the birth of children affected by this disease.
A Call for a Thalassemia-Free Society
The Chief Guest,
Nayeb Sajja-da-nasheen Alhaj Syed Irfanul Haque Maizbhandari, emphasized that building a Thalassemia-free society requires collective awareness and responsible action.
He highlighted the importance of premarital screening, particularly Hemoglobin Electrophoresis, to identify individuals who may carry abnormal hemoglobin traits. He urged everyone to take this simple but important step before marriage and encouraged conscious citizens from every level of society to play an active role in preventing Thalassemia.

The Special Guest,
Dr. A. K. M. Ekramul Hossain
Executive Director of Bangladesh Thalassemia Samity Hospital, Dhaka
spoke about Thalassemia as a hereditary disease and emphasized that awareness, screening and responsible decision-making can play a vital role in prevention.
He expressed his appreciation to Maizbhandari Shah Emdadia Blood Donors Group for organizing this important awareness programme and encouraged the organization to continue its humanitarian and educational initiatives.
🎓 Keynote Presentation
The keynote presentation was delivered by
Dr. Zainal Uddin Muhuri
Consultant at Fatikchhari Upazila Health Complex.
Through an informative multimedia presentation, he discussed in detail:
• What is Thalassemia?
• Why does it occur?
• How is it inherited?
• The importance of carrier screening
• Available treatment options
• Most importantly, how Thalassemia can be prevented
The seminar was presided over by the respected Head Teacher Mohammad Abul Kashem sir of Katirhat Girls’ High School and conducted by
