সহজ ভাষায় বললে, এটি মস্তিষ্কের এমন একটি অবস্থা যেখানে একটি ইন্দ্রিয় কাজ করার সময় স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে অন্য আরেকটি ইন্দ্রিয়ও সাড়া দেয়। অর্থাৎ, মস্তিষ্কের সেন্সরি তারগুলো যেন একে অপরের সাথে যুক্ত! 🧠

যাদের এই বিশেষ ক্ষমতা আছে (যাদেরকে 'সিনেসথেট' বলা হয়), তাদের দুনিয়াটা আমাদের চেয়ে একটু আলাদা আর দারুণ রোমাঞ্চকর:
✅ তারা কোনো অক্ষর বা সংখ্যা দেখলে একটি নির্দিষ্ট রঙ দেখতে পান (যেমন: '৪' সংখ্যাটি তাদের কাছে সবসময় নীল)।

চট্টগ্রামের ইতিহাসে এমন এক ভূ’মিকম্পের কথা মানুষ জানে না, যা ছিলো এযাবৎ বাংলার সবচেয়ে বড় ভূ’মিকম্প। সাল ১৭৬২, ২ এপ্রিল। বিকেল ৫ টায় এমন এক ভূ’মিকম্প শুরু হয়েছিলো যা ৪ মিনিট অবধি স্থায়ী ছিলো। মাত্রা ছিলো রিখটার স্কেলে ৮.৮। এটা এতোটাই ভ*য়াবহ ছিলো যে কামান গর্জনের মতো ১৫টি বিকট বিঁস্ফোরণের শব্দ শোনা গিয়েছিলো! পরবর্তী ২৪ ঘণ্টায় আরও ১১ বার ভূকম্পন অনুভূত হয়েছিল। ভূমিকম্পটির উৎপত্তিস্থল চট্টগ্রামে হলেও এর প্রভাবে সমগ্র বাংলা কেঁপে উঠেছিল। ব্রহ্মপুত্র নদসহ বেশ কয়েকটি নদীর গতিপথ পরিবর্তিত হয়ে গিয়েছিল!

এই ভূ*মিকম্পের শক্তিশালী প্রভাবে চট্টগ্রামের সীতাকুণ্ডে দুটি আ*গ্নেয়গিরি থেকে অ*গ্ন্যুৎপাত শুরু হয়েছিলো বলে উল্লেখিত। সবচেয়ে ভ*য়াবহ বিপর্যয় ঘটেছিলো কক্সবাজারে। কক্সবাজারের কাছে কয়েক শ মানুষকে নিয়ে গোটা একটা দ্বীপ সমুদ্রের গভীরে তলিয়ে গিয়েছিলো। ঘরবাড়ি, পশুপাখি কিচ্ছু বাদ যায় নি। তাদের হদিস আর কোনোদিন পাওয়া যায় নি।

এছাড়াও এই ভূ*মিকম্পের কারণে চট্টগ্রামের অনেক পাহাড় ফেটে চৌচির হয় এবং পুকুর-দিঘি সমতলভূমিতে পরিণত হয়। কর্ণফুলী নদীর পানিতে চট্টগ্রাম শহর ১০ ফুট উঁচু জলোচ্ছ্বাসে প্লাবিত হয়েছিল। শহরের অনেক জায়গায় বিশাল গভীর ফাটল ও খাদের সৃষ্টি হয়েছিল। কোথাও কোথাও ২০-৩০ হাত প্রশস্ত ফাটল দেখা যায়।

চট্টগ্রাম শহরে মাটির এবং ইটের তৈরি সব ঘরবাড়ি মাটির সাথে মিশে গিয়েছিলো। কর্ণফুলী নদীর উল্টোদিকে একটা গ্রামও সাত হাত পানির নিচে তলিয়ে গেছে। পাথরঘাটা থেকে হাওলার আট মাইল দূরত্বের মধ্যে ভূমিতে বিশাল সব ফাটল তৈরি হয়ে জলে নিমজ্জিত হয়ে গিয়েছিলো। বাঁশবাড়িয়ার কাছে সমুদ্র উপকূলের ৭ জায়গায় মাটি ফেটে কুয়ার মতো গর্ত হয়ে যায়। নদী, সমুদ্র এবং উপকূলবর্তী সমতলে সবচেয়ে বেশি আঘাত করেছে এই ভূ*মিকম্প। গবেষকদের ধারণা, এই ভূ*মিকম্পে নি হ ত মানুষের সংখ্যা কয়েক শ থেকে কয়েক হাজার হতে পারে।

১৭৬১ সালে পলাশী যুদ্ধের বকেয়া বাবদ মীর কাশিমের কাছ থেকে চট্টগ্রামের দেওয়ানি আদায় করার পর আবারও সম্ভাবনা জেগেছিল চট্টগ্রামকে কেন্দ্র করে। তাই ফোর্ট উইলিয়ামের দ্বিতীয় প্রধান কর্তা হ্যারি ভেরেলস্টকে পাঠানো হয়েছিল গভর্নর হিসেবে। কিন্তু চট্টগ্রামে কোম্পানি শাসন চালু হওয়ার ১৫ মাস পরই স্মরণকালের ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে ভ*য়াবহ ভূমিকম্পটি আঘাত করে। এ ভূ*মিকম্পে ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানির প্রধান কুঠি এবং দুর্গ সম্পূর্ণভাবে ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত হয়েছিল। কাঠের বাড়িতে বসবাস করার ফলে ইংরেজ কর্তাদের প্রাণ রক্ষা পেয়েছিল।

চট্টগ্রামের গভর্নর হ্যারি ভেরেলস্ট প্রত্যক্ষদর্শী হিসেবে এই ভূ*মিকম্পের ভয়ংকর অভিজ্ঞতা কলকাতার ফোর্ট উইলিয়ামের গভর্নর জেনারেল হেনরি ভ্যানসিটার্টকে লিখে জানিয়েছিলেন। সেখান থেকেই এই ভূ*মিকম্পের স্পষ্ট তথ্য পাওয়া যায়।

She remembers being 12 days old. Not in fragments. Not in stories told to her later. In detail.

Rebecca Sharrock, an Australian mother, has a rare condition known as Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory, or HSAM, sometimes called hyperthymesia. It allows her to recall nearly every day of her life with vivid clarity.

Fewer than 100 people worldwide are believed to have this condition.

Rebecca can tell you what she was doing on a specific date years ago. What the weather felt like. What she wore. What she dreamed. What conversations happened. Even physical sensations, including pain from injuries.

One of her earliest memories dates back to when she was just 12 days old. Her mother had taken a photograph of her in a car, and Rebecca says she remembers the moment clearly, not because of the photo, but because she experienced it.

Brain scans of individuals with HSAM have shown stronger connections between areas linked to conscious and subconscious memory. It allows them to instantly retrieve personal life events by date. However, it does not mean they have photographic memory for textbooks or random facts. It specifically relates to autobiographical memory.

On the surface, it sounds like a superpower. Rebecca can pinpoint what she was doing on major historical dates. She has appeared on television programs where her recall was tested against calendars and news archives, and she consistently provided accurate details.

But there is another side. She does not get to forget. Embarrassing moments. Arguments.�Bad news.�Grief. They do not fade. They replay.

She has spoken about how watching television news can be overwhelming because negative stories stick permanently. Sleep can be difficult because memories resurface vividly. Trauma does not blur with time.

For most people, memory softens. Edges round off. Pain dulls. For her, it stays sharp. Rebecca reportedly only realized her ability was unusual after seeing media coverage about HSAM years ago. What she thought was normal turned out to be extraordinarily rare.

Her story fascinates people because it challenges how we understand memory itself. We spend so much of our lives trying to hold on to moments before they slip away. She cannot let go, even if she wants to.

And maybe that reminds us that forgetting is not a flaw. Sometimes, it is protection.
