2. Why did the poet stop by the woods though it was dark and he was alone?
Answer :He stopped because the woods were beautiful, quiet, and full of snow. Their peaceful and mysterious beauty attracted him, and he wanted to enjoy the moment.
3. Guess what promise the poet had to keep before he would sleep.
Answer:The promise may be his duties and responsibilities toward family, work, and life. He had many tasks to complete before taking rest.
4. Write an imaginary dialogue between the poet and his horse.
Message
Poet: Why are you shaking your bells, my dear horse?
Horse: Because it is strange to stop here in the dark woods.
Poet: I know, but the woods are lovely, dark, and deep.
Horse: It is cold and snowy. Shouldn’t we continue our journey?
Poet: Yes, we must go. I still have promises to keep.
Horse: Then let us move forward before it gets darker.
Poet: Yes, my friend, we have miles to go before we sleep.
B) Solitude — Ella Wheeler Wilcox
1. Explain:
i) “Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone;”
People like to share happiness with others, but in times of sorrow many people leave us alone. Joy attracts people, but sadness often isolates us.
ii) “Succeed and give, and it helps you live, But no man can help you die.”
Success and generosity make life easier and happier, but death is a journey every person must face alone.
2. Why do the mountains echo the songs that we sing but not our sighs?
Mountains echo joyful songs because happiness spreads easily, but sorrow remains personal and lonely. Sadness does not receive the same response.
3. When do you have many friends and when do they leave you?
We have many friends during happy and successful times. They often leave us during sadness, failure, and hardship.
4. Summary of the poem Solitude
The poem teaches that people gladly share happiness but avoid sorrow. When we laugh, others join us, but when we cry, we suffer alone. Success brings friends, while failure brings loneliness. The poet reminds us that life’s struggles must often be faced alone. Therefore, we should be strong and self-dependent.
