প্রশ্ন করেছেন একজন:

'The bell rang before we had finished the work.' - এ বাক্যটি কি সঠিক?

এ প্রশ্নের উত্তর একটু পরে দিচ্ছি৷ আগে Past perfect tense এর সাধারণ ব্যবহারবিধি মনে করিয়ে দেই।

আমরা জানি, অতীতের দুটো ঘটনার মধ্যে অপেক্ষাকৃত আগে ঘটে যাওয়া ঘটনা প্রকাশ করতে past perfect tense ব্যবহৃত হয়। আমরা এও জানি, বাক্যে 'before' conjunction-টি ব্যবহৃত হলে before এর পূর্বে past perfect tense এবং পরে past indefinite tense থাকে৷ উদাহরণ হিসেবে সেই চিরচেনা বাক্যটি আরো একবার দেখা যাক-

The patient had died before the doctor came.

রোগীর হয়ত তাড়া ছিল, তাই সে আগেই ওপারে চলে গেল। ডাক্তার সাহেব হেলেদুলে আসতে আসতে দেরি করে ফেলল। এখন রোগী যেহেতু তার কর্ম আগে সম্পাদন করে ফেলেছে তাই সে-ই past perfect এর দাবিদার।

সত্যি বলতে কী, বাক্যে 'before/after' থাকলে আপনি যদি উভয় clause simple past tense এ-ও লিখেন তাহলেও কোন সমস্যা হয় না। আগের বা পরের ঘটনা বাক্য দেখেই বুঝা যায়। তবে বাক্যে 'before' ছাড়া অন্য conjunction ব্যবহৃত হলে অপেক্ষাকৃত আগের ঘটনা নির্দেশ করতে অবশ্যই past perfect tense ব্যবহার করতে হবে, নইলে অর্থ এদিক-ওদিক যাওয়ার আশংকা থেকে যায়। খেয়াল করুন:

When the guests arrived, we started cooking.
প্রথমে গেস্ট আসল। তারপর রান্না শুরু করলাম।

When the guests arrived, we had already started cooking.
প্রথমে রান্না শুরু করলাম। তারপর গেস্ট আসল।

এবার প্রশ্নের বাক্যটির দিকে তাকানো যাক।

'The bell rang before we had finished the work.

যেহেতু 'we had finished the work' Past Perfect tense এ আছে সেহেতু এটা মনে হওয়া স্বাভাবিক আমরা আগে কাজটি শেষ করেছিলাম। এমনটাই তো সচরাচর হয়ে থাকে, তাই না?

কিন্তু এ বাক্যের অর্থ হচ্ছে - আমরা কাজ শেষ করার আগেই ঘন্টা বাজলো৷

অর্থাৎ, simple past tense যে ঘটনা নির্দেশ করছে তা সম্পন্ন হয়েছে আগে এবং past perfect যে ঘটনা নির্দেশ করছে তা ঘটেছে পরে! ঠিক যে মুহূর্তে ঘন্টা বাজলো সে মূহুর্তে আমাদের কাজ অসম্পূর্ণ ছিল।

ডাক্তার-রোগীর যে বাক্যটা আমরা আগে দেখেছি তার সাথে বর্তমান বাক্যটি একটু তুলনা করুনঃ

The patient had died before the doctor came.
The bell rang before we had finished the work.

খেয়াল করেছেন নিশ্চয়ই, ১ম বাক্যে past perfect রয়েছে before এর আগে অথচ ২য় বাক্যে past perfect tense আছে before এর পরে।

Before এর পরে past perfect থাকলে বুঝে নিতে হবে simple past এ বর্ণিত actionটি আগে সম্পাদিত হয়েছিল। হতে পারে এটা আপনার চিরচেনা নিয়মের ব্যতিক্রম, কিন্তু past perfect এর এ রকম ব্যবহার ইংরেজিতে প্রচলিত আছে।

I received a question in my inbox that asked about the following sentence:

"The patient had died before the doctor came."

The query was whether the sentence would still make sense if we replaced 'had died' with 'died.' Both phrases essentially convey the same idea – that the patient passed away before the doctor's arrival. The use of the past perfect tense, as in "had died," is typically employed to indicate that one event happened before another in the past. However, in this case, the presence of the word "before" in the sentence already clearly establishes the chronological order of events.

So, the question arises: is it necessary to use the past perfect tense here? The answer is that it depends on the desired level of emphasis and clarity. Using the past perfect tense can add a sense of order and precision to the sequence of events, but in this context, it might be seen as somewhat redundant due to the presence of "before."

However, when sentences lack explicit time-related conjunctions like "before" or "after," the choice of tense becomes critical. In these cases, the verb form itself determines the sequence of events. For instance:

"His wife had cooked dinner when he came home."

In this sentence, without "before" or "after," we can understand the use of the past perfect tense. It indicates that the wife had completed dinner preparation before her husband's arrival. In contrast:

'His wife cooked dinner when he came home' suggests that she began cooking after her husband returned. Thus, when conjunctions like "before" or "after" are absent, selecting the appropriate tense is essential to prevent a significant alteration in the intended meaning.

Does any other country in the world have as many methods for teaching English as we do in Bangladesh? Or are we truly unmatched in this regard?

কারো ব্যক্তিগত বিষয় নিয়ে হুট করে অবিবেচকের মত প্রশ্ন করে ফেললে লিসেনার বিব্রত হতে পারেন।

আপনার কি বয়ফ্রেন্ড আছে?
আচ্ছা আপনার বয়স কত?
বেতন কত পান?

একান্তই যদি এসব তথ্য জানার প্রয়োজন হয়ে পড়ে তাহলে ভদ্রতার খাতিরে আগে-ভাগে পারমিশন চেয়ে নেয়ার ঢংয়ে প্রশ্ন করা যেতে এভাবে:
Do you mind me asking? Do you have a boyfriend?
অথবা, Do you have a boyfriend, if you don't mind me asking?
অথবা , If you don't mind me asking, do you.... ?

তবে মজার ব্যাপার হল, ব্যাপারটা অনেকটা পারমিশন নিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করার মত লাগলেও শ্রোতাকে কিছু বলার সুযোগ না দিয়েই সেই অনাকাঙ্ক্ষিত প্রশ্ন জুড়ে দেয়া হয়!

একইভাবে আপনি যদি কারো দোষ ত্রুটি বা ভুল-টুল ধরিয়ে দিতে চান, তাহলে তা সরাসরি বলে ফেলাটা অশোভনীয়, অপ্রত্যাশিত। সুতরাং এক্ষেত্রে আপনি বলতে পারেন:

If you don’t mind me saying, you shouldn't have behaved in such an irresponsible way.

একেই বলে ভদ্রভাবে ভর্ৎসনা করা, তাই না?
