Australia Replaces ANZSCO with OSCA for Job Classification
Australia has replaced the ANZSCO with OSCA for job classification
The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) codes.
The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) is to be replaced with OSCA.
The new classification aims to better represent the evolution of the Australian labor market.
The transition from ANZSCO to OSCA marks Australia’s commitment to staying ahead of labor trends.
Occupational Classification in Australia
The Australian Bureau of Statistics replaced the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) with the Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA). The new changes are aimed at providing a better overview of the job market in Australia.
The ANZSCO has laid the foundation of occupational classification in both Australia and New Zealand but bot the countries have implemented separate systems. The transition from ANZSCO to OSCA marks Australia’s commitment of staying ahead of labour trends.
Note: The ANZSCO codes are still in use but the assessing authorities in Australia may adopt OSCA codes soon.
What is OSCA?
The Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) is a product of a two-year review done by around 2000 stakeholders, 1000 reviewed occupations and 800 submissions. It offers a more minute classification than ANZSCO.
The key changes brought by the implementation of OSCA include:
300 new job roles added
250 outdated jobs removed
421 unit groups established
Number of occupations rose to 1156 from 1076 in ANZSCO 2022
Gendered language in classifications removed
Enhanced coverage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander occupations
These changes, by providing detailed information, are likely to enhance clarity and relevance and would introduce better adaptability for the workforce in Australia.
Role of OSCA in Skilled Immigration
The Australian government is planning to improvise the skilled immigration framework of the country following the release of the OSCA. However, OSCA is not yet adopted for immigration by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
ANZSCO is still applicable for certain visa programs in Australia. The country is willing to fully transition ANZSCO to OSCA, promising a clearer and more efficient system for foreign workers, employers, and policymakers.

Australia is a global frontrunner in equipping students with the skills needed for the future of work, according to the latest QS World Future Skills Index 2025.
This achievement highlights the strength of Australia’s tertiary education system and its ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of emerging industries.
Key highlights from the Skills Index 2025
The QS World Future Skills Index evaluates 81 countries across four areas. Here is how Australia performed on each:
Future of Work (96.5): Australia is excelling in the transition towards a green economy, with policies focused on sustainability and renewable energy.
Academic Readiness (98.9): Australia is a global leader in research and innovation, supported by initiatives like the AI Roadmap.
Skills Fit (87.2): Australia has strong alignment between skills delivered and industry demand, especially in areas like digital literacy, AI, and cybersecurity.
Economic Transformation (90.6): Australia's economy has a strong focus on digital and green infrastructure. Investments in digital connectivity, renewable energy, and industrial innovation are shaping Australia's capacity for economic transformation. One of the key indicators used for Economic Transformation is Work Readiness – and Australia scored a perfect score (100.00)!
Australia’s performance across these areas secures its position as a Future Skills Pioneer, well-prepared to tackle the challenges of a rapidly evolving global jobs market.
The fastest growing and declining jobs
According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, global demand for AI specialists, sustainability managers, and digital transformation experts is growing rapidly, with growth rates of over 200% between 2025 and 2030. At the same time, traditional roles such as data entry clerks and administrative staff are rapidly declining.
Australian education and training providers are adapting their curriculum to align with global trends. They also foster innovation through partnerships with industry and international collaborators.
As the QS World Future Skills Index 2025 shows, Australia’s focus on skills development in these emerging fields positions it as a world-class study destination for career preparation.
Skills demand in Australia
Australia’s new Skills in Demand visa enables employers to address workforce shortages by hiring skilled workers where there is a skills need. This can include hiring international graduates in Australia on a Temporary Graduate visa (TGV) subclass 485.
The Australian Government’s Core Skills Occupation List highlights the need to attract talent in high-demand areas, such as AI, cybersecurity, engineering, health, green technologies, and more.

Temporary Graduate visa (TGV) streams and study requirements
The Temporary Graduate visa (TGV) program has three streams:
The Post-Vocational Education Work (PVEW) stream
Post-Higher Education Work (PHEW) stream
Second Post-Higher Education Work stream.
The qualification that you use to apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) will determine which of these streams is right for you.
If you hold an Associate Degree, Diploma or trade qualification, you should apply for the TGV Post-Vocational Education Work (PVEW) stream.
If you hold a Bachelor degree, Masters degree or Doctoral (e.g. PhD) degree, you should apply for the TGV Post-Higher Education Work (PHEW) stream.
If you hold a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma, please see the information below about changes to the TGV (PHEW) stream study requirement.
Graduate Certificates
Graduate Certificates no longer meet the study requirement for the Temporary Graduate visa. You can still study a Graduate Certificate, but it can’t be used as an eligible qualification to apply for a TGV.
An eligible qualification, such as a Bachelor degree, Masters degree or Doctoral (e.g. PhD) degree,) must have been completed in the six months before lodging your TGV application.
A Graduate Certificate can be completed while holding a TGV.
Graduate Diplomas
You can use a Graduate Diploma as an eligible qualification for the TGV (PHEW stream) if:
Your Graduate Diploma follows your Australian-awarded Bachelor, Masters or Doctorate (e.g. PhD) degree and is related to that qualification’s field of study; and
You studied your Graduate Diploma program in the same, or next, academic year as the Bachelor, Masters or Doctorate (e.g. PhD) degree you completed.
These requirements mean that Graduate Diploma level study will help you to build up specialised skills in your area of study and improve your career prospects.
Graduate Diplomas in a different area of study
You can study a Graduate Diploma that is not related to your previous Bachelor, Masters or Doctoral Degree, but this study would not qualify for a TGV.
You must have completed your eligible TGV qualification within six months of lodging your application.
A Graduate Diploma can be completed while holding a TGV.
Moving to the new arrangements
These changes came into effect on 14 December 2024.
Any graduates who lodged a TGV application prior to 14 December 2024 using a Graduate Diploma as their qualifying study will be assessed according to the regulations in force at the time of application.
Where needed, Graduate Certificate holders who previously applied for a TGV and are identified as negatively impacted will be contacted by the Department of Home Affairs.
Other visa options
In addition to a TGV, former students may be eligible for a range of visas including other temporary residence visas or the new Skills in Demand visa, which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa on 7 December 2024.
For more information about the new Skills in Demand visa, see: Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482)
