The Pyramid of Learning helps us understand how the underlying systems impact the maturity of other functions in our body. I should say this pyramid is inspired by the Pryamid of Learning, since I made one slight change.

I placed Reflex Integration and Sensory processing on the same level. Reflexes are triggered by sensory input. If we are not responding to the input optimally, we are not triggering the reflex. If we are not moving through the reflexive patterns we are not exploring a variety of sensory experiences.

Sensory Processing and Reflex Integration can not be separated. Just like Sensory and motor can not be separated.

If we have holes in sensory processing or reflex integration, we may see challenges in higher level skills: postural stability, bilateral control, motor planning, and perceptual motor skills, ultimately impacting our success learning, regulating our emotions, and demonstrating executive functioning skills.

Ayres Sensory Integration looks at the all of the areas from base to top (from underlying skills to functional skills). Personally, I like to find those holes and patch them up to improve higher level functioning. Like any good foundation, we don't want any cracks.
