A literary seminar on âCoelhoâs The Alchemist and Tagoreâs Atithi: A Journey in Search of Freedom and Self-Discoveryâ was held today, 15 August 2026 (Saturday), at the University Conference Room of Bandarban University. The seminar was organized by the Department of English, Bandarban University, with the aim of fostering literary discussion and critical engagement among teachers and students.
The paper was presented by Mr. Sohrab Hossain, Lecturer, Department of English, Bandarban University. In his presentation, he explored Paulo Coelhoâs 'The Alchemist' and Rabindranath Tagoreâs 'Atithi' from the perspectives of freedom, self-discovery, individual aspiration, and the human desire for an unconstrained life. The presentation highlighted the similarities and differences between the two literary works and examined how their protagonists undertake journeys that lead them toward a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationship with the world.
The seminar was anchored by Mr. Hasan Mahmood, lecturer, Department of English, Bandarban University, who conducted the programme in an organized and engaging manner. Later on he discussed on the comparative existential issues of the two texts. The main discussant was Professor Mah-e-nur Qudsi Islam, Department of English, University of Chittagong. In her discussion, she critically evaluated the presented paper and offered valuable observations on the literary, philosophical, and comparative dimensions of 'The Alchemist' and 'Atithi'. Her insightful comments enriched the academic discussion and provided important directions for further exploration of the topic. Ms. Pranami Barua, Lecturer, Department of English, Bandarban University, was also present at the seminar.
The seminar provided an enriching platform for intellectual exchange and encouraged participants to engage with literature through comparative and critical perspectives. The discussion demonstrated how literary texts from different cultural and historical contexts can be brought into dialogue to explore universal human concerns such as freedom, identity, self-realization, and the search for meaning.
